Richness, polish and classic Penfolds character define the limited-edition Penfolds Special Shiraz 2024. Created as a celebration of Shiraz, the variety that has played a defining role in the history and identity of Penfolds, this release presents a generous and confidently structured expression of Australian red wine. Its distinctive lineage includes a small portion of matured Penfolds Grange drawn directly from barrel. This inclusion adds an intriguing connection to the producer’s flagship Shiraz while allowing the Special Shiraz to retain its own individual character. Presented in a dry and full-bodied style, the wine combines concentrated berry fruit with savoury depth and polished texture. Aromas of dark berries and sweet spice introduce a profile that is both expressive and recognisably Penfolds.

The palate is silky and sleek, revealing berry coulis alongside pecan pie, hazelnut and bright goji berry nuances. Nutty richness adds breadth, while the vibrant fruit provides freshness and definition through the centre of the palate. Fine, chalky tannins give the wine shape without detracting from its plush fruit character. The balance between ripe berries, savoury elements and controlled structure produces an immediately appealing yet composed expression. Its persistent finish carries lingering dark fruit, nuts and subtle spice, supported by finely textured tannins. Bottled at 14.5% alcohol, the Penfolds Special Shiraz 2024 offers a bold and polished interpretation of the variety at the heart of the Penfolds tradition.

      Penfolds

Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold at Magill Estate in South Australia, Penfolds has grown from a small colonial winery into one of Australia’s most significant wine producers. Its history has been shaped by generations of winemakers willing to challenge convention while preserving a remarkably consistent approach to style and quality.

Mary Penfold played a defining role in the winery’s early development, overseeing production and experimenting with grape varieties and winemaking techniques as the estate expanded. A century later, Max Schubert would transform Penfolds again. Appointed the company’s first Chief Winemaker in 1948, his ambition to create an Australian red capable of developing over decades led to the first experimental Grange in 1951.

That spirit of experimentation has continued through successive generations of Penfolds winemakers. From benchmark Australian wines including Grange, St Henri and Bin 707 to contemporary projects extending beyond Australia, the House has continued to evolve while maintaining a winemaking lineage stretching back more than 180 years.
