Varietal purity, layered dark fruit and polished structure define the Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon 2024. First released in 1993 from the 1990 vintage, Bin 407 was developed in response to the increasing availability of high-quality Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. Inspired by the renowned Bin 707, it offers a more approachable expression of the variety while retaining the depth, structure and longevity associated with the Penfolds house style. The 2024 release draws Cabernet Sauvignon from Coonawarra, Padthaway, McLaren Vale, Wrattonbully and the Barossa Valley. This multi-regional approach allows Penfolds to combine aromatic definition, ripe fruit, savoury complexity and firm tannin structure within a single wine. The vintage began with below-average winter rainfall, followed by an unsettled spring that affected fruit set in several South Australian regions.
Rainfall during December helped stabilise vine canopies before warm and dry conditions prevailed from January onwards. Heat events during March encouraged smaller berries and concentrated flavours, while cooler April conditions allowed the winemaking team to make measured harvest decisions. The wine was matured for 12 months in French and American oak hogsheads, including 16% new French oak and 5% new American oak. Aromatically expressive, it combines wild raspberry and blackcurrant with forest floor, bay leaf, olive tapenade, cedar, baking spices and subtle herbal notes. The palate is creamy, broad and generously fruited, with mulberry and cherry plum supported by fresh acidity and pithy, chalk-like tannins. Savoury notes of toasted cumin and barbecue jalapeño provide additional depth and persistence. Approachable on release yet firmly structured for ageing, Penfolds recommends a peak drinking window from 2028 to 2048.

Quintessential Australian Cabernet in all its glory and typicity..It’s a Cabernet of distinctive power, concentration, continuity, layers, depth and future.
At its heart, 407 is all about a varietal interpretation and hence the fruit comes first and it’s striking and irresistibly aromatic in scents of blue fruits, black cherries, plum, earth, dry leaves and a peppery spice, anise intensity. Structurally, it’s solid as a rock, the kind of frame to build a long future on.
Bin 407 was created to express Cabernet Sauvignon in a more immediately approachable style than Bin 707 while remaining unmistakably Penfolds. Classic cassis, blackberry and mulberry aromas sit alongside bay leaf, cedar, graphite and dried herbs. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with vibrant blackcurrant fruit, redcurrant, dark chocolate and cedar spice supported by finely woven tannins. There’s excellent freshness and balance throughout, finishing with confidence and persistence.
Penfolds has been a pioneer in the world of winemaking since its establishment in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends that have driven the company's success since its establishment in 1844.
At Penfolds, winemaking is not just about producing wine; it is about creating something extraordinary that endures. The philosophy behind Penfolds is grounded in a balance between tradition and innovation. Every bottle is a reflection of this philosophy, blending the art of winemaking with scientific precision and modern technology. Penfolds’ commitment to quality has seen generations of winemakers continually refine their craft, while their constant curiosity drives them to experiment and explore new possibilities. Penfolds wines are a celebration of the unique Australian terroir, harnessing the country’s diverse regions to produce wines of exceptional character and complexity.
Penfolds’ philosophy extends beyond just the winemaking process—it’s about creating wines that can be enjoyed today or cellared for future generations. With a focus on balance, structure, and depth, every bottle is designed to stand the test of time. Whether it’s a rich, full-bodied red or a crisp, elegant white, Penfolds wines are crafted to bring people together, to inspire conversations, and to be savoured and shared. Their ability to evolve and adapt, while maintaining a consistent commitment to quality, has solidified Penfolds as one of the world’s most respected and celebrated winemakers.
