Añejo Tequila combines the character of Blue Weber agave with extended oak maturation.
To qualify as Añejo, tequila must spend at least one year but less than three years ageing in oak containers with a maximum capacity of 600 litres.
As maturation progresses, the spirit can develop richer notes of vanilla, caramel, cocoa, dried fruit and spice while retaining the cooked-agave character at its core.
What Does Añejo Tequila Taste Like?
Añejo generally shows greater oak influence than Blanco or Reposado.
Cask type, previous use and maturation time all matter, with flavours ranging from vanilla, caramel and baking spice to dried fruit, chocolate, tobacco and toasted wood.
The collection includes Don Julio 1942, Fortaleza Añejo, Don Fulano Añejo, Herradura Añejo, Patrón Añejo, Cincoro Añejo, Casamigos Añejo and 818 Añejo.
Don Julio 1942 & Prestige Añejo
Don Julio 1942 has become one of the most recognisable premium Añejo Tequilas, sitting at the centre of the collection in formats ranging from miniature and 375ml bottles through to 750ml and 1.75L.
Other premium Añejo releases include Clase Azul Añejo, Gran Patrón Burdeos, ArteNOM Selección 1146 and limited cask expressions from producers such as Don Fulano.
These bottles demonstrate the growing breadth of Añejo beyond conventional core-range tequila.
How to Drink Añejo Tequila
Añejo is particularly suited to slow sipping, either neat or over a large cube.
Its combination of oak and agave also makes it a natural alternative to whiskey or Cognac in stirred drinks such as an Añejo Old Fashioned.
Serving it at cool room temperature rather than heavily chilled allows more of its aroma and texture to emerge.
Choosing Añejo Tequila
For a traditional agave-led style with measured oak, explore Fortaleza or Don Fulano.
For richer and more polished expressions, Don Julio 1942, Clase Azul, Cincoro and Patrón offer established premium references.
Those interested in maturation can also explore special cask releases, where Sherry, wine or other oak programmes add another layer to the category.
