Legacy, power, and historical significance define this exceptional Australian icon from Penfolds. The Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 1984 stands as a classic expression of the vision of Max Schubert, whose pioneering approach reshaped Australian fine wine. Produced in South Australia from select vineyard sites, Grange represents the pinnacle of Penfolds’ multi-regional blending philosophy. The 1984 vintage reflects a cooler growing season, resulting in a wine of structure, restraint, and longevity. The added distinction of a bottle signed by Max Schubert elevates this release into a rare collector’s piece, bridging both vinous and historical value.
In the glass, the wine reveals remarkable maturity, with tertiary complexity now at the forefront. Layers of dark fruit have evolved into notes of leather, spice, earth, and dried fruit, supported by a still-present core of structure. The palate is harmonious, with softened tannins and integrated oak creating a seamless, velvety texture. Despite its age, the wine retains vitality, with acidity providing lift and balance to its richness. The hallmark intensity of Grange remains, though now expressed with finesse and nuance rather than sheer power. This is a wine for contemplation, offering a profound sense of history and craftsmanship in every glass. It is best enjoyed slowly, ideally alongside richly flavoured dishes or simply on its own to appreciate its evolution.

Medium to deep brick-red color, the 1984 Grange has a wonderfully expressive nose of baked plums, prunes and spice cake with hints of mocha, licorice, leather and tree bark. Medium-bodied, the palate is still very lively with a great backbone of crisp acid and chewy tannins, finishing long and layered.
A very good Grange, the 1984 exhibits a saturated dark ruby color, and a big, smoky, earthy, cassis and licorice-scented nose. Rich and full-bodied, with high tannin, this is a backward, structured Grange that needs another 5-10 years of cellaring.
Penfolds has been a pioneer in the world of winemaking since its establishment in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends that have driven the company's success since its establishment in 1844.
At Penfolds, winemaking is not just about producing wine; it is about creating something extraordinary that endures. The philosophy behind Penfolds is grounded in a balance between tradition and innovation. Every bottle is a reflection of this philosophy, blending the art of winemaking with scientific precision and modern technology. Penfolds’ commitment to quality has seen generations of winemakers continually refine their craft, while their constant curiosity drives them to experiment and explore new possibilities. Penfolds wines are a celebration of the unique Australian terroir, harnessing the country’s diverse regions to produce wines of exceptional character and complexity.
Penfolds’ philosophy extends beyond just the winemaking process—it’s about creating wines that can be enjoyed today or cellared for future generations. With a focus on balance, structure, and depth, every bottle is designed to stand the test of time. Whether it’s a rich, full-bodied red or a crisp, elegant white, Penfolds wines are crafted to bring people together, to inspire conversations, and to be savoured and shared. Their ability to evolve and adapt, while maintaining a consistent commitment to quality, has solidified Penfolds as one of the world’s most respected and celebrated winemakers.
Aromas of dried plum, fig and blackberry layered with leather, tobacco, cedar, spice and earthy undertones.
Full-bodied yet refined, showing stewed fruits, dark chocolate, spice and savoury notes, with silky tannins and integrated oak.
A persistent finish with notes of dried fruit, spice, earth and a gentle, fading tannin structure.
