Cool-climate perfume, savoury complexity and finely structured fruit define the Penfolds Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz 2024. First produced from the 1962 vintage, Bin 128 was created as an elegant regional counterpoint to the richer, warm-climate expression of Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz. The wine is made entirely from Shiraz grown in Coonawarra, where the region’s distinctive terra rossa red clay soils lie over limestone. These celebrated soils, together with Coonawarra’s cool climate, contribute fragrance, transparency, mineral definition and refined structure to the finished wine. The 2024 growing season began with below-average winter rainfall and a cool spring marked by several late-October frost events, reducing yields in some low-lying vineyards. Significant rainfall arrived across the Limestone Coast in late November, replenishing soil moisture before cooler and wetter-than-average conditions continued through December.

From January, the season became progressively warmer and drier, allowing the grapes to develop concentration while retaining freshness. A brief period of intense heat in early March accelerated ripening, although healthy soil moisture reserves helped preserve acidity and balance. Cooler and more settled conditions through April allowed the winemaking team to harvest gradually, resulting in small berries with firm tannins and concentrated flavour. The wine was matured for 12 months in French oak hogsheads, of which 12% were new, reinforcing the regional character without dominating the fruit. Medium-bodied and finely structured, it combines dark and red fruits with cracked pepper, floral perfume, savoury spice and distinctive ferrous mineral notes. Fresh acidity provides precision and momentum, while fine tannins carry the wine through a focused, energetic and unmistakably Coonawarra finish. Penfolds recommends drinking the wine from release through 2045, indicating considerable potential for graceful development in bottle.

      Trusted by the professionals

It is the spiciness and overall integration that shines. Oozes potential with some serious aging ability.

      — Jeni Port, Winepilot, 95 Points

Juicy, crunchy and gravelly, with ample blackberry pastille, dark chocolate flavours, a hint of bush garrigue and looseknit granular tannins.

      Penfolds

Penfolds has been a pioneer in the world of winemaking since its establishment in 1844 by Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold. The company's success has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who have pushed the development of the company to extraordinary, bold new heights. Mary Penfold's reign at the helm of Penfolds saw years of determination and endeavour, experimenting with new methods in wine production. In 1948, Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker and he propelled Penfolds onto the global stage with his experimentation of long-lasting wines - the creation of Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. Soon, the medals began flowing, and Grange quickly became one of the most revered wines around the world. In 2012, Penfolds released its most innovative project to date - 12 handcrafted ampoules of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Penfolds continues to hold dear the philosophies and legends that have driven the company's success since its establishment in 1844.
