A benchmark example of warm-climate Australian Shiraz, Penfolds Bin 28 Shiraz 2022 delivers the generosity and structure that have defined this label since its first release in 1959. Sourced from key regions across South Australia, including McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully, it reflects the classic Penfolds house style: layered fruit, savoury depth and polished oak integration.

The 2022 vintage was matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads (around 10% new), allowing the dark, plush fruit to take centre stage. Expect rich black plum, blackberry and liquorice, framed by chocolate, spice and a faintly gamey edge. Firm but ripe tannins and a lively acid line provide both early approachability and a long cellaring horizon. Presented here in a premium gift box, this is a timeless South Australian Shiraz built for both immediacy and longevity.

“Deep-set satsuma plum, blackberry and blueberry fruits… lovely bright fruit presence; long, flavourful and delicious now with excellent cellaring potential.”

      — Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion, 95 Points

“Beautiful aromas of meaty charcuterie merging with licorice and lifted aniseed. Dark plummy fruits and dark chocolate with a hint of graphite. So well balanced and poised.”

      Penfolds

Founded in 1844 by Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold at Magill Estate in South Australia, Penfolds has grown from a small colonial winery into one of Australia’s most significant wine producers. Its history has been shaped by generations of winemakers willing to challenge convention while preserving a remarkably consistent approach to style and quality.

Mary Penfold played a defining role in the winery’s early development, overseeing production and experimenting with grape varieties and winemaking techniques as the estate expanded. A century later, Max Schubert would transform Penfolds again. Appointed the company’s first Chief Winemaker in 1948, his ambition to create an Australian red capable of developing over decades led to the first experimental Grange in 1951.

That spirit of experimentation has continued through successive generations of Penfolds winemakers. From benchmark Australian wines including Grange, St Henri and Bin 707 to contemporary projects extending beyond Australia, the House has continued to evolve while maintaining a winemaking lineage stretching back more than 180 years.
