Torbreck is actually named after the forest near Inverness, Scotland where the winery's founder, David Powell worked as a lumberjack after completing university studies.
The winemaking style at Torbreck is meticulous and dedicated to producing exceptional wines. They use carefully selected 225-litre oak barriques for maturation, known as Dominique Laurent 'Magic Casks'. The oak is personally harvested from Forêt de Tronçais in Allier, and the staves are aged for 48 to 54 months at an exposed location for maximum seasoning. The staves are then hand-made into barrels and heated over three differing flames for several hours, resulting in a gentle toast due to the remarkable density of the wood. Torbreck's winemaking style reflects their commitment to producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Barossa region.
Torbreck is the name of a forest near Inverness, Scotland. You’ll find more than a passing nod to the Celts in Torbrecks wine naming conventions including this reference to the place to stop on a highland trail for a rest – a Bothie.
The Bothie is a fortified blend of traditional grape varieties which have been used to make this style of wine in the Barossa for generations. Including Madeira Semillon, Frontignac, Palomino, Doradillo, Grenache and Shiraz, these varieties have a rich, and sometimes forgotten history of fortified winemaking in the Barossa. When the vintage allows, the grapes are picked at optimum ripeness. A small amount of spirit is then added to the fermenting wine to arrest the yeast activity and raise the alcohol level. The resulting barrels are then allowed to mature over a number of years to develop a rich tawny colour and deep, concentrated flavours, until ready to be added to the Bothie blend.
Enjoyable with dessert, The Bothie displays powerful aromas of dried stone fruit and butterscotch, accompanied by extraordinary spicy caramel notes. The rich flavours of dried fig, toasted almond and citrus rind balance perfectly with the soft and integrated spirit, creating a full, lush, round palate.
