Torbreck and the Old Vine Heritage of the Barossa
Torbreck Vintners was founded in 1994 with a clear focus on preserving and expressing the Barossa Valley’s historic old vineyards. The winery works extensively with Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro, drawing inspiration from the Rhône while retaining a distinctly Barossa sense of place.
Many of the vineyards behind Torbreck’s most important wines are dry-grown and exceptionally old, including sites with vines planted more than a century ago. The winemaking approach is deliberately traditional and relatively hands-off, with an emphasis on letting vineyard character, vine age and seasonal variation remain visible in the finished wines.
RunRig and The Laird
RunRig is one of Torbreck’s defining wines, produced from a selection of old-vine Shiraz vineyards across the Barossa Valley and complemented by a small proportion of Viognier. The combination gives the wine concentration and depth while adding floral lift, perfume and finesse.
The Laird is more singular in origin. It comes from the Gnadenfrei vineyard in Marananga, planted in 1958, and represents one of the most concentrated expressions of Barossa Shiraz in the Torbreck portfolio. The fruit is hand-harvested, fermented in small open-top fermenters, basket pressed and matured for an extended period in new French oak before further bottle ageing.
Together, RunRig and The Laird show two different interpretations of premium Barossa Shiraz: one built through the blending of distinguished old vineyards, the other defined by a single historic site.
The Factor, Les Amis and Single-Site Expression
The Factor is sourced from selected old-vine Shiraz vineyards along the Barossa Valley’s Western Ridge. Dense, brooding and structured, it is matured in a combination of new and seasoned French oak and is known for dark fruit, spice, savoury complexity and strong mineral character.
Les Amis turns the focus to Grenache. Sourced from a single vineyard in western Greenock, it is a more refined and finely textured expression, showing the purity and elegance that old-vine Grenache can achieve in the Barossa.
Other limited releases, including The Forebear and Descendant, continue this emphasis on vineyard identity and mature vine material, giving the range significant depth beyond Torbreck’s best-known labels.
The Steading, The Struie and the Wider Torbreck Range
The Steading is one of the clearest expressions of Torbreck’s Rhône influence, blending Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro from established Barossa vineyards. It offers a layered, savoury style built around red and dark fruit, spice and fine tannin.
The Struie takes a different approach by combining Shiraz from the Barossa Valley floor with fruit from the cooler Eden Valley. This contrast brings together richness and freshness, giving the wine both depth and aromatic lift.
The wider range includes Woodcutter’s Shiraz, Cuvée Juveniles, The Kyloe Mataro and white wines such as Woodcutter’s Semillon, providing a broader introduction to the varieties and regions that shape the Torbreck portfolio.
Back Vintages, Verticals and Large Formats
Torbreck’s range has particular appeal for collectors because many of its wines are released with the structure to develop over long periods. Kent Street Cellars carries a substantial selection of back vintages across RunRig, The Laird, The Factor, The Struie and Les Amis, alongside multi-vintage verticals.
The collection also extends into large formats, including 1.5L magnums, 3L and 6L bottles across selected wines such as The Struie and The Steading. These formats are useful both for long-term cellaring and for larger occasions where mature Barossa wine is the focus.
