The 2022 Mount Edelstone Shiraz from Henschke in South Australia’s Eden Valley is presented here in 1.5L magnum, offering scale and longevity for the cellar. Drawn from ungrafted vines planted in 1912, this single-vineyard Shiraz is grown under organic and biodynamic practices on deep red-brown clay loam soils. Matured for 20 months in French oak hogsheads, with a small proportion of new oak, the wine reflects both the pedigree of site and the continuity of Henschke’s custodianship.
Deep crimson with purple hues, the aromatics are layered and precise, showing dark bramble fruits, black cherry and satsuma plum interwoven with sage, bay leaf, thyme, black pepper and cedar. The palate is rich and composed, carrying black and blue fruits with anise, cocoa, dark spice and crushed herbs. Supple, velvety tannins and fine acidity shape a balanced, persistent finish of notable length. The 2022 season, defined by a cool start, reduced yields and an extended ripening period, has delivered a wine of clarity and structure. In magnum, the format supports slow, measured evolution, making it well suited to long-term cellaring or serving alongside roast lamb or slow-braised beef.

Equally impressive is the youthful vibrancy and freshness on show in this four-year-old shiraz with its high spice aromatics, florals and signature Mt. Edelstone herbals. Dark fruits, black cherry mingle with Aussie bush, earth, sage, bay leaf and floral violet top notes. Floating between the layers is a lively spiciness, rising as the wine crosses the palate. …Elegance is a given with Mt. Edelstone, but the youthful finesse of this wine is next level.
An elegant wine of great finesse and poise that captures in an instant the very essence of this great vineyard. The nose shows a more savoury black olive and sage bush character that is lifted with an edgy pepperiness with a hint of bay leaf. It’s bright, lively, with almost boundless energy. This is the modern Edelstone style in essence, captured magnificently. Has all the character with less opulence and more finesse. Love it. There is great brightness and energy with a luminosity that positively glows on the palate.
…fresh and bright young-wine aromas with notes of of blackberry underlying the fresh and dried herbs, smoked meats, pepper and mixed spices. Great depth of flavour and concentration but also supreme elegance and harmony. The balance is so impressive in such a young Edelstone. There are lashings of tannins but they are lovely supple, fine-grained tannins, in perfect harmony with the wine. An exceptional vintage indeed.
Henschke is one of Australia's most prestigious and historic wineries, with over 153 years and six generations of family ownership. Located in Keyneton, South Australia, within the renowned Eden Valley wine region, Henschke has built a legacy of crafting premium wines, including its iconic single-vineyard wines, Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone. Since 1862, the Henschke family has cultivated exceptional vineyards in the Eden Valley, Barossa Valley, and Adelaide Hills, with a focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation.
Stephen and Prue Henschke, the fifth-generation winemaker and viticulturist team, have led the winery since 1979, restoring native vegetation and adopting organic and biodynamic vineyard practices. The sixth generation, led by Johann Henschke, continues to honour the traditions of the past while embracing modern winemaking techniques to ensure Henschke remains a leader in fine wine production.
Henschke's commitment to sustainability and excellence has garnered numerous accolades, including the Wine Enthusiast's New World Winery of the Year (2021) and the Halliday Wine Companion's Winery of the Year. The winery has also been recognised with the Robert Parker Wine Advocate Green Emblem, highlighting its dedication to environmentally conscious practices.
Henschke’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard. The winery has embraced organic and biodynamic farming practices, ensuring the health of the vines and the land for future generations. By working with nature rather than against it, they produce wines that are not only reflective of the place but also allow the true expression of the fruit to come through. The family’s attention to detail, commitment to quality, and respect for the environment have resulted in a portfolio of wines that have gained worldwide recognition for their excellence.
