The 2022 The Wheelwright Shiraz from Henschke in South Australia’s Eden Valley is a single-vineyard wine drawn from vines planted in 1968 at 470 metres elevation. Composed of 100% Shiraz and farmed with organic and biodynamic practices, this site reflects both altitude and careful vineyard stewardship. Matured for 20 months in French oak hogsheads, with a small proportion of new oak, the wine balances depth with precision.
Deep crimson with violet hues, the aromatics are fragrant and layered, showing raspberry, black cherry and boysenberry with notes of nutmeg, aniseed, cocoa, sage, wild fennel and charcuterie. The palate is poised and finely structured, revealing mulberry, blueberry and black plum interwoven with white and pink peppercorn and subtle floral tones. Fine acidity carries the wine through a long, silky tannin finish. The 2022 season, shaped by a cool start, reduced yields and a long ripening period, has delivered a wine of clarity and elegance, well suited to cellaring or pairing with roasted game or herb-crusted lamb.

This is such a lovely wine, brimming with bright red fruits supported by a fine, bright and lively acidity, fine chalky tannins and a neatly implemented oak. Has a beautifully seductive mouthfeel with tremendous depth and concentration of Shiraz. …Has beautiful peppery violet fragrances with stacks of red fruit.
Expressive and fruit pure with aromas of blackberry, blueberry and black cherry fruits with hints of brown spice, flowering herbs, sage, a flash of red cherry, violets, cedar, graphite and crushed rock. There’s a lovely core of pure plum and blue fruits over graphite, layers of spice and citrus blossom high tones. Graceful and sleek with melt-in-the-mouth tannins and a bright, sustained finish.
…notes of blackberries, tobacco leaves, cold tea, aniseed, beef stock, dusty dark chocolate and cherries. There is a touch of plushness running through the wine, which is extremely well balanced and has exceptional length, finishing with fine, velvety tannins. Intensity is maintained throughout, as is that seductive and seamless texture.
Henschke is one of Australia's most prestigious and historic wineries, with over 153 years and six generations of family ownership. Located in Keyneton, South Australia, within the renowned Eden Valley wine region, Henschke has built a legacy of crafting premium wines, including its iconic single-vineyard wines, Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone. Since 1862, the Henschke family has cultivated exceptional vineyards in the Eden Valley, Barossa Valley, and Adelaide Hills, with a focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation.
Stephen and Prue Henschke, the fifth-generation winemaker and viticulturist team, have led the winery since 1979, restoring native vegetation and adopting organic and biodynamic vineyard practices. The sixth generation, led by Johann Henschke, continues to honour the traditions of the past while embracing modern winemaking techniques to ensure Henschke remains a leader in fine wine production.
Henschke's commitment to sustainability and excellence has garnered numerous accolades, including the Wine Enthusiast's New World Winery of the Year (2021) and the Halliday Wine Companion's Winery of the Year. The winery has also been recognised with the Robert Parker Wine Advocate Green Emblem, highlighting its dedication to environmentally conscious practices.
Henschke’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard. The winery has embraced organic and biodynamic farming practices, ensuring the health of the vines and the land for future generations. By working with nature rather than against it, they produce wines that are not only reflective of the place but also allow the true expression of the fruit to come through. The family’s attention to detail, commitment to quality, and respect for the environment have resulted in a portfolio of wines that have gained worldwide recognition for their excellence.
