The 2022 Cyril Henschke Cabernet Sauvignon from Henschke in South Australia’s Eden Valley is presented here in 1.5L magnum, offering extended ageing capacity and measured evolution. This single-vineyard wine is composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Cyril Henschke Vineyard on the estate, planted in the late 1960s on a north-facing slope. Grown under organic and biodynamic practices and matured for 20 months in French oak hogsheads with a small proportion of new oak, it reflects precision, restraint and site clarity.
Deep crimson with ruby hues, the aromatics are lifted and spicy, showing blackberry, blackcurrant, tamarillo and violet alongside cassis, cocoa, black liquorice and crushed herbs. The palate is concentrated and finely structured, carrying a core of black fruits layered with cedar, clove, star anise and black olive. Focused acidity and fine-grained tannins drive a long, powerful finish. The 2022 season, shaped by a cool start, reduced yields and an extended ripening period, has produced a wine of clarity and endurance. In magnum, the structure unfolds more gradually, supporting long-term cellaring and pairing with roast beef or game.

It’s a firm and slightly tighter wine of terrific linear structure with a bright, lively acidity, which in this vintage is particularly evident. The thread of blackcurrant fruit merges with a slightly dried herb and sage-like character. It is probably the most precisely focused of any Cyril to date, leading to its poise and defined, detailed finish.
This is a wine to make you fall in love with cabernet sauvignon and its secret weapon: tannin. The tannins are superlative, fine grained, agile, pliable, providing not only an important structural role in the 2022 cabernet but enhancing it. It’s a full-on charm offensive - words rarely written about tannin. They arrive in the wine with intent, a conduit for the delivery of intense, concentrated black fruits, dark plums with ripe dark roasting spices layered across earth, leaf, sage and undergrowth. Tannins run long and deep but, gracefully so, contributing elegance to the wine. Beautifully finished and crafted.
Lifted blackberry, black cherry and blackcurrant fruits with hints of olive tapenade, cedar, crushed herbs, bay leaf, violets and crushed rocks. Harmonious and silky in its travel with a core of ripe fruit layered with spice and herbs, fine, sandy tannins and a finish that draws out beautifully. No problem tucking this away in the cellar for an extended period.
Henschke is one of Australia's most prestigious and historic wineries, with over 153 years and six generations of family ownership. Located in Keyneton, South Australia, within the renowned Eden Valley wine region, Henschke has built a legacy of crafting premium wines, including its iconic single-vineyard wines, Hill of Grace and Mount Edelstone. Since 1862, the Henschke family has cultivated exceptional vineyards in the Eden Valley, Barossa Valley, and Adelaide Hills, with a focus on quality, sustainability, and innovation.
Stephen and Prue Henschke, the fifth-generation winemaker and viticulturist team, have led the winery since 1979, restoring native vegetation and adopting organic and biodynamic vineyard practices. The sixth generation, led by Johann Henschke, continues to honour the traditions of the past while embracing modern winemaking techniques to ensure Henschke remains a leader in fine wine production.
Henschke's commitment to sustainability and excellence has garnered numerous accolades, including the Wine Enthusiast's New World Winery of the Year (2021) and the Halliday Wine Companion's Winery of the Year. The winery has also been recognised with the Robert Parker Wine Advocate Green Emblem, highlighting its dedication to environmentally conscious practices.
Henschke’s philosophy is deeply rooted in the belief that great wines are made in the vineyard. The winery has embraced organic and biodynamic farming practices, ensuring the health of the vines and the land for future generations. By working with nature rather than against it, they produce wines that are not only reflective of the place but also allow the true expression of the fruit to come through. The family’s attention to detail, commitment to quality, and respect for the environment have resulted in a portfolio of wines that have gained worldwide recognition for their excellence.
