      Depth, spice and cool-climate elegance define By Farr Shiraz 2024, a distinctive red wine from the Farr family’s estate in Bannockburn, Geelong. The fruit comes from the original By Farr vineyard, planted in 1994 on a north-facing slope. The site is composed of red volcanic soil with a base of limestone and deep-set sandstone, giving the wine both fruit intensity and mineral structure. By Farr’s approach to Shiraz is deliberately restrained and site-focused, producing a wine that favours savoury detail, texture and balance over overt richness. The fruit is hand-picked from VSP trellised vines, with 20 per cent whole bunch retained during fermentation. In most years, between 2 and 4 per cent Viognier is co-fermented with the Shiraz, adding aromatic lift and subtle richness to both the bouquet and palate.

      Fermentation occurs naturally, with the fruit remaining in tank for 19 days before pressing. The wine then spends 18 months in French oak, 20 per cent of which is new, before being bottled under vacuum. The 2024 vintage at By Farr was shaped by a mild season, timely irrigation support and a warmer finish that allowed the reds to build concentration, character and poise. Shiraz followed the Irrewarra vineyard and Gamay in the harvest sequence, benefiting from the later-ripening phase of the season. In the glass, the wine shows the depth and complexity expected of cool-climate Shiraz, with pepper, mineral and earthy notes layered through the fruit. The palate begins with a gentle sweetness before moving into intense fruit, savoury detail and long earthy tannins. It is powerful yet elegant, carrying structure and concentration while maintaining the finesse that defines By Farr’s house style.
