Perfume, finesse and seamless structure define By Farr Sangreal Pinot Noir 2024, one of the estate’s most important single-vineyard expressions from Geelong’s Moorabool Valley. The Sangreal vineyard was planted in 1994, making it the oldest vineyard on the Farr family property. It sits on a north-facing slope with bluestone and overlaying limestone soils, marked by red ironstone colouring at the surface. This soil profile differs from many of the estate’s other vineyards, which are largely based on black volcanic soil with limestone influence. The vine rows run north to south, receiving full sun exposure throughout the day and producing fruit known for perfume, elegance and prettiness. The vineyard is traditionally the first Pinot Noir site to be harvested at By Farr, reflecting both its exposure and its distinct microclimate.
The clones used in Sangreal are 114 and 115, which the Farr family believes have evolved over time into what they refer to as the “Sangreal clone.” Sangreal is consistently made with 70 per cent whole bunch and aged in 70 per cent new oak, reinforcing both aromatic complexity and structural depth. Fermentation takes place in a five-tonne oak barrel with an open-top fermenter, following a four-day cold soak and natural fermentation over seven to nine days. Once the cap falls, the tank is pressed, and the wine is racked only once after malolactic fermentation before being sulphured and bottled. The full winemaking process takes approximately 18 months, and the wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve its natural flavour and bouquet. The 2024 vintage delivered reds of concentration, character and poise, with Sangreal capturing the site’s hallmark perfume, red-fruited purity, whole-bunch complexity and finely woven structure.

The By Farr winery, established by Gary Farr in 1994, has become one of the most prestigious names in Australian winemaking. Situated in the Geelong region, specifically in the Moorabool Valley, the winery is known for its meticulous, hands-off approach to winemaking. With a strong commitment to organic and biodynamic practices, By Farr is recognised for producing wines that are a true expression of their terroir, particularly Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Gary Farr, a pioneer of Pinot Noir in the region, has passed down his expertise to his son, Nick Farr, who has now fully taken the reins of the winery. Under Nick’s leadership, By Farr continues to produce exceptional wines that have garnered critical acclaim both in Australia and internationally. Each bottle of By Farr wine reflects the family’s dedication to craftsmanship, sustainability, and the pursuit of perfection in every vintage.
At By Farr, the philosophy is simple: respect for the land, the vine, and the fruit. This approach is grounded in a commitment to sustainable, organic farming practices, as well as hands-off winemaking that lets the terroir speak for itself. The Farr family believes that a great wine starts in the vineyard, with meticulous attention to detail paid to every aspect of vineyard management, from canopy care to harvest timing. Winemaking follows a minimalist approach, with native yeast fermentation, careful barrel selection, and the avoidance of fining and filtration, allowing each wine to evolve naturally and express its true character. This approach has resulted in wines that are elegant, structured, and complex, capturing the unique essence of the Geelong region.
