Moss Wood Ribbon Vale Chardonnay 2025 is a carefully structured Margaret River Chardonnay produced from the estate’s Ribbon Vale Vineyard in Wilyabrup. The 2024–25 growing season progressed steadily, with a mild summer and no prolonged heat events, allowing the Chardonnay to ripen evenly while retaining freshness and balance. The fruit was harvested on a median date of 11 March 2025 at an average ripeness of 13.2° Baumé and a yield of 6.37 tonnes per hectare. All grapes were picked by hand, sorted at the winery and whole-bunch pressed to preserve purity and minimise excessive extraction. The clarified juice commenced fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks using several selected yeast strains.

Midway through fermentation, the wine was transferred to 228-litre French oak barriques, of which 32% were new, to complete both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation. It remained in barrel for approximately nine months before being racked, blended, stabilised and bottled in January 2026. The resulting wine combines ripe stone fruit and citrus with subtle floral, pastry, nougat and oak-derived characters. Fine phenolics and fresh acidity provide definition through the medium-to-full-bodied palate, balancing the wine’s generous fruit and creamy texture. Although attractive in its youth, the wine possesses the structure required for extended development, with Moss Wood recommending at least ten years of bottle maturation and potential evolution beyond twenty years. This combination of fruit concentration, measured oak and persistent acidity makes the 2025 release a refined and cellar-worthy expression of Margaret River Chardonnay.

      Moss Wood

Since 1984, Clare and Keith Mugford have steered Moss Wood with a precision that few Australian estates can match. As both winemakers and viticulturists, the Mugfords have shaped the legacy of this founding Margaret River winery with an unwavering commitment to detail—from vineyard floor to bottle. Moss Wood's philosophy is simple but uncompromising: every decision, whether in the field or in the cellar, must enhance the final wine. It’s this ethos that underpins a portfolio known not only for its consistency and age-worthiness but also for its deep understanding of site, vintage, and vine.

Moss Wood was among the first to believe in the potential of Margaret River, long before the region gained its global renown. Drawing inspiration from Bordeaux, the Mugfords refined a style uniquely suited to Wilyabrup’s coastal environment, instead of trying to copy Europe outright. It’s this balance of innovation and restraint that makes Moss Wood a benchmark—not just for the region, but for Australian wine more broadly.
