Classical structure and remarkable aromatic purity define the Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon 2023, one of Margaret River’s most iconic and collectible wines. Produced from the historic Moss Wood vineyard in the Wilyabrup subregion, this wine continues the estate’s long-standing reputation for crafting Cabernet Sauvignon of elegance, longevity and regional distinction. The 2023 vintage reflects the cooler and more measured conditions of the growing season, allowing the fruit to ripen gradually while preserving freshness, perfume and structural detail. Meticulous vineyard management and low-intervention winemaking ensure that the character of the site remains clearly expressed, with Cabernet Sauvignon supported by small portions of complementary Bordeaux varieties.
In the glass the wine is intensely perfumed and finely layered, revealing cassis, blackberry and dark plum aromas woven with cedar, tobacco leaf, bay leaf and subtle floral lift. The palate is medium to full-bodied with exceptional balance, combining concentrated black fruit with refined tannins and vibrant acidity. Careful maturation in French oak enhances the wine’s texture and complexity while maintaining the clarity and precision that define Moss Wood’s style. The 2023 release shows impressive restraint and composure in its youth, suggesting excellent ageing potential over the coming decades. Beneath the primary fruit lies a savoury mineral thread that adds sophistication and length to the finish. This Cabernet Sauvignon is ideally suited to premium beef dishes, lamb, hard cheeses or long-term cellaring for those who appreciate the evolution of fine Australian Cabernet.

“A very refined and polished Moss Wood with blackcurrants, blueberries, mint chocolate, violets and cigar box aromas. Medium- to full-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that run the length of the wine. It’s long, polished and sophisticated with wonderful finesse and structure. The tannins are so integrated and beautiful. Exceptional length.”
“This is a superb young cabernet that carries the hallmark Moss Wood stamp of elegance and longevity. The fruit concentration is exceptional yet delivered with restraint and precision. Layers of blackcurrant, mulberry and cedar unfold slowly, framed by impeccably fine tannins and beautifully judged oak. A wine of harmony, persistence and immense cellaring potential.”
Since 1984, Clare and Keith Mugford have steered Moss Wood with a precision that few Australian estates can match. As both winemakers and viticulturists, the Mugfords have shaped the legacy of this founding Margaret River winery with an unwavering commitment to detail—from vineyard floor to bottle. Moss Wood's philosophy is simple but uncompromising: every decision, whether in the field or in the cellar, must enhance the final wine. It’s this ethos that underpins a portfolio known not only for its consistency and age-worthiness but also for its deep understanding of site, vintage, and vine.
Moss Wood was among the first to believe in the potential of Margaret River, long before the region gained its global renown. Drawing inspiration from Bordeaux, the Mugfords refined a style uniquely suited to Wilyabrup’s coastal environment, instead of trying to copy Europe outright. It’s this balance of innovation and restraint that makes Moss Wood a benchmark—not just for the region, but for Australian wine more broadly.
Moss Wood and Ribbon Vale are both situated in the pioneering sub-region of Wilyabrup—arguably the beating heart of Margaret River. First planted in 1969, the Moss Wood Vineyard lies across 11.78 hectares of unirrigated, north- and east-facing slopes, with gravelly loam soils layered over clay. At Ribbon Vale, established in 1977, similar dry-grown practices prevail across its 6.36 hectares, but the site faces south and west, offering nuance and contrast within the broader Wilyabrup terrain.
Across both vineyards, viticulture is handled with a light but knowledgeable touch. Canopy management, minimum tillage, and careful soil stewardship are part of a broader strategy to ensure vine health and longevity. Pruning, trellising, and even harvest decisions are constantly reassessed in light of current research and decades of in-house observation. It’s this empirical approach—rooted in Margaret River’s young but evolving terroir—that allows Moss Wood to produce wines of quiet power and remarkable poise, year after year.
