Poise, perfume, and quiet power define one of Australia’s most iconic cool-climate reds. Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier 2002 is a landmark expression from the Canberra District, a wine that helped redefine Australian Shiraz through its inspiration from the Northern Rhône, particularly Côte-Rôtie. Crafted by Tim Kirk, this wine blends Shiraz with a small proportion of co-fermented Viognier, enhancing aromatic lift and textural finesse. The 2002 vintage was shaped by a challenging growing season, resulting in lower yields but exceptional concentration and intensity.

In the glass, the wine reveals a medium-bodied yet deeply complex profile, marked by purity and aromatic detail rather than weight. Fragrant red and dark fruits are interwoven with spice, florals, and savoury elements, creating a layered and evolving bouquet. The Viognier component contributes lifted notes of apricot blossom and exotic spice, while also softening the tannin profile. On the palate, the wine is finely structured, with silky tannins and vibrant acidity providing both tension and length. There is a seamless integration of fruit, oak, and savoury nuance, reflecting meticulous vineyard and winery practices. As the wine opens, it reveals further complexity with pepper, earth, and subtle game notes adding depth. The 2002 vintage shows both immediate charm and the capacity for long-term evolution, standing as a testament to Clonakilla’s refined, site-driven approach. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as roasted duck, lamb, or mushroom-based cuisine.

      Clonakilla

Clonakilla is a family-owned winery with a legacy that dates back to 1971, when Dr. John Kirk, an Irish biochemist, established the vineyard in Murrumbateman, New South Wales. Inspired by a love for wine and an understanding of Australia’s unique climate, Dr. Kirk sought to craft wines that showcased the terroir of the region, sparking a journey that would place Clonakilla among Australia’s most respected wineries. The Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier, first produced in 1992 by Dr. Kirk’s son Tim, was inspired by a visit to France’s Côte-Rôtie, where Tim discovered the art of co-fermenting Shiraz with Viognier. This innovation added a distinctive aromatic complexity and finesse to the wine, establishing Clonakilla Shiraz Viognier as an Australian icon.

Today, Clonakilla is led by Tim Kirk, who, along with his wife Lara, has expanded the winery’s influence while maintaining the family’s dedication to crafting wines that embody elegance, complexity, and a sense of place. The Kirks’ commitment to quality is evident in each vintage, and Clonakilla wines continue to garner acclaim and awards globally. With a range that includes Shiraz Viognier, Riesling, Chardonnay, and Rhône-inspired blends, Clonakilla’s portfolio celebrates the distinct character of each grape variety and vineyard site. The Clonakilla story is one of passion, family heritage, and a relentless pursuit of excellence in winemaking, cementing its reputation as one of Australia’s premier cool-climate wine producers.
