Bourbon may be America’s most famous whiskey, but the category stretches well beyond Kentucky. Across the United States, distillers work with corn, rye, wheat and malted barley to produce styles ranging from rich, oak-led bourbon to spicy rye, charcoal-mellowed Tennessee whiskey and a new generation of American single malts.

What Makes Bourbon Bourbon?
Bourbon is a distinctly American style of whiskey. It must be produced in the United States from a mash containing at least 51% corn and matured in new, charred oak containers.
Corn gives bourbon much of its natural richness, while new charred oak contributes the vanilla, caramel, spice and toasted character closely associated with the style. Beyond those foundations, differences in mash bill, fermentation, distillation, maturation, warehouse location and proof create considerable variation from one producer to another.
Kentucky remains its historic centre. Bottles from Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, Woodford Reserve, Maker’s Mark, Wild Turkey and Elijah Craig show just how broad bourbon can be, from softer wheated styles to high-rye recipes and uncompromising barrel-proof releases.
Rye, Tennessee Whiskey & American Single Malt
Rye whiskey offers another side of American distilling. With rye making up at least 51% of the mash for American rye whiskey, the style generally leans towards greater spice, structure and savoury character. Willett, Michter’s and Jack Daniel’s all offer distinctive interpretations.
Tennessee whiskey shares much of its production framework with bourbon, while the style is closely associated with Tennessee production and charcoal mellowing before maturation. Jack Daniel’s remains its best-known reference point, from Old No. 7 and Gentleman Jack through to Bonded and Single Barrel releases.
American single malt is one of the category’s most interesting areas of development. Now formally recognised as a distinct American whiskey style, it is produced from 100% malted barley at a single US distillery. Producers such as Westland and Westward are showing how American barley, oak, climate and regional identity can take malt whisky in a distinctly different direction.
Small Batch, Single Barrel & Cask Strength
Much of the interest in contemporary American whiskey lies beyond the core expressions.
Small-batch bottlings allow producers to assemble selected barrels for a particular profile. Single-barrel whiskey isolates the character of an individual cask, meaning variation between releases is part of the appeal. Cask-strength and barrel-proof bottlings are released at or close to their natural maturation strength, offering greater concentration and a more direct expression of the barrel.
The collection includes examples across each style, from Four Roses Single Barrel and Baker’s 7 Year Old to Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Maker’s Mark Cask Strength and limited Willett Family Estate releases.
Rare & Limited American Whiskey
American whiskey has also become an increasingly important collecting category.
Older age statements, annual releases and highly allocated bottlings can be produced in exceptionally small quantities. Blanton’s Single Barrel, Michter’s 10 Year Old, Willett Family Estate and Van Winkle sit alongside limited releases such as Booker’s batches, Four Roses Limited Edition Small Batch and Michter’s Legacy Series bottlings including Shenk’s Homestead and Bomberger’s Declaration.
For collectors, individual release, age, barrel selection and provenance can matter just as much as the producer itself. Availability varies considerably, particularly for older and limited-production whiskey.
Choosing an American Whiskey
For classic bourbon character, Buffalo Trace, Four Roses, Elijah Craig and Woodford Reserve are strong places to begin. Maker’s Mark offers a softer wheated expression of bourbon, while Wild Turkey and Booker’s move towards greater proof and intensity.
Rye drinkers can look towards Michter’s and Willett, while Jack Daniel’s covers a broad spectrum of Tennessee whiskey. For something outside the traditional Kentucky framework, American single malts from Westland and Westward offer a distinctly different perspective.
The deeper end of the collection includes single barrels, cask-strength bottlings, older releases and allocated American whiskeys for drinking, collecting or adding to an established spirits collection.
