The High Sands Grenache is the pinnacle of the estate. Reaching deep within the sandy soil, our prized 1946 old vines produce wines that balance intense power and complexity with fragrance and beauty.
Sourced exclusively from the special Block 31. At 210m elevation, this is the highest section of the 1946 planted bush vine Grenache, which also has the deepest sandy soil. Extremely low yields. Hand-picked on the 23rd of March, being a flower day on the biodynamic astrological calendar. Mechanically sorted. Destemmed, 50% whole berries and remaining crushed. Cold soak. Open fermenters with a long gentle maceration for a minimum of 21 days. Wild yeast ferment. No pressings are used in this wine. Matured on lees in older large Format French oak and sandstone egg for 11 months. Bottled February 2021
From the 1.7ha Block 31, the highest section of the 1946 bush vines. 50% whole berries, wild yeast open-fermented; matured in a foudre and ceramic eggs for 11 months. Truly great wines add something new on each taste; here, there's an ethereal, otherworldly purity to the lingering finish and aftertaste. Drink to 2050. - James Halliday, 99 Points.
This has such precision with aromas of blackberries, cloves, raspberries, black tea, rooibos, dried rosemary and iron shavings. Dark and mineral with a medium body and a firm, very fine and tight tannin frame. Fantastic tension and freshness. From biodynamically grown grapes. - James Suckling, 97 Points.
