This mature dry grown vineyard with substantial plantings of century old vines lies on well draining red-brown chocolaty loams over shale. Yields are minute with very high concentration and seed content. In short, the quality of the fruit is outstanding with incredible sugar/acidity/flavour balance. The Cabernet Malbec is an old fashioned wine, yet it confidently expresses the distinct character of the vineyard in timeless style. The Malbec component comes from four blocks planted between 1898 and 1960, providing complexity and interest. No matter the vintage, each release is a profoundly individual wine with intense bright fruit, underlying maturation notes and firm but pronounced tannins structures. 50/50 Cabernet/Malbec. Cabernet planted 1920 and 1971, Malbec 1898 and 1920. 12 months in hogsheads (20% new).

Old vines, 50/50 Cabernet/Malbec. Cabernet planted 1920 and 1971, Malbec 1898 and 1920. 12 months in hogsheads (20% new). Executive winemaker Stephen George. pH 3.42, TA 6.4 g/l. A slightly reductive note and a touch of iodine. Very distinctive nose. Earthy/mineral and peppery and a little meaty. Restrained fruit profile. Sinewy. Dark and yet fresh and very fine. Elegant yet with great length and power and a slight savouriness on the finish. Fruit is held back. Great wine.

      — Julia Harding MW, Jancis Robinson

Beautiful. Mint and blackcurrant, earth and cedarwood. Rushes of fine-grained tannin. Completely in balance. Excellent length. Excellent shape. I would have scored it higher a year or two back – but the blush of youth has gone and it’s now set on a path towards maturity, so that’s to be expected. I reckon I’ll hunt down some more.

      — Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front

Aussie bush, wet earth, red fruits, amazing array of exotic spice. Savoury as all get out in the palate, plushness and incredible length of savouriness. Finishes dusty, spicy, sour-sweet. Touch of oxidised cork character, but you’d dig this anyway.

      — Mike Bennie, The Wine Front

      Wendouree

Wendouree has remained one of the quiet benchmarks of Australian wine since the vineyard was first planted in 1893 by Alfred Percy Birks. Today, Tony and Lita Brady continue the estate’s deeply traditional approach, preserving a style shaped by old vines, low-intervention viticulture, and an unwavering connection to place. Situated on an easterly ridge on the northern edge of South Australia’s Clare Valley, the unirrigated vineyards are rooted in shallow red loam over limestone, conditions that naturally limit yields and intensify concentration.

The estate’s oldest Shiraz vines, many dating back to the original 1893 plantings, are believed to contain genetic material linked to the historic James Busby collection. These low-yielding vines produce small berries with thick skins and high seed content, giving Wendouree wines their structure, depth, and longevity. In the winery, the approach remains deliberately restrained and largely laissez-faire, allowing vineyard character and seasonal variation to define each release rather than heavy-handed winemaking.

Despite the estate’s standing among Australia’s most revered producers, older bottles remain remarkably scarce. Until 1974, Wendouree wines were sold in bulk to merchants for bottling and distribution, meaning many early wines were blended or released without estate labelling. That rarity has only deepened the reputation of Wendouree Shiraz, now regarded as one of the country’s most distinctive and enduring expressions of old-vine Australian Shiraz.
