Thomas Wines Kiss Shiraz 2017
Born and bred in McLaren Vale, Andrew ‘Thommo’ Thomas reckoned he had it all figured out. He would graduate from Roseworthy and pursue a career in South Australia, following in the footsteps of his father, Wayne Thomas. And then fate stepped in. Between semesters, Thomas took on a vintage at Tyrrells. Here he met and worked under larger-than-life Murray Tyrrell and his experience in the Hunter would imprint on Thomas for life.
Kiss Shiraz is a cheeky name for a serious wine. It is an individual vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz, grown on the tough clay/loam soils of the Pokolbin Estate vineyard (planted 1969). These naturally low cropping vines consistently produce fruit with exceptional depth and concentration. This is the benchmark Shiraz for Thomas Wines, expressing the very best qualities of each vintage. The first vintage of Kiss Shiraz was in 2001, and since that time this label has received countless wine show awards and accolades.
Ripe raspberry, dark chocolate, walnuts nuttiness, some clove and cedar oak in tow. Oak a strong layer on fruit flavour, lends a ‘fruit and nut chocolate’ kind of vibe to the already bold, ripe fruit character, finishing the wine woody and panforte chocolate-like. Denser, darker expression of Hunter shiraz, done well, with good tannin and length on board. - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
