A defining expression of Italian Bordeaux-style excellence, the 2022 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia DOC is a wine of poise, depth and resonance from one of Tuscany’s most esteemed estates. This vintage reflects a warm yet balanced growing season in Bolgheri, where gravelly soils and Mediterranean breezes lend vibrant freshness and structural tension to the grapes. The blend of predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc yields a wine marked by concentrated dark fruit and refined aromatic complexity. On the nose it opens with ripe red currant, blackberry, cedar and hints of Mediterranean herbs, countered by subtle mineral notes and spice. The palate is composed and articulate, framed by polished tannins and lively acidity that support layered flavour without heaviness. Its texture is silky yet firm, revealing a core of dark fruit, tobacco, graphite and balsamic spice that unfolds with harmony and focus. Long in finish, the 2022 Sassicaia promises both immediate allure and extended cellar potential, embodying balance and longevity in equal measure. Pair with richly flavoured roasted meats, game or mature cheeses to fully appreciate its refined structure and complexity.

“Simply brilliant in this vintage, showing a remarkable level of poise and freshness. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied and well-structured, with velvety tannins and a lively acidity that provides perfect balance. Rich flavours of red/dark fruits, tobacco and spices unfold beautifully, leading to a long, persistent finish that is both refined and elegant.”
“Plenty of red currant, cedar, iron and terra cotta aromas follow through to a medium to full body with graphite, sandalwood, red currants and fresh Mediterranean herbs such as thyme and rosemary. The tannins are chewy but polished in texture. This is a Sassicaia that needs three or four years of bottle age to come together and soften.”
“The 2022 Sassicaia reveals a beautiful fruit profile with fresh blackberry, tart cherry and Mediterranean tones of blue rosemary blooms and lavender sachet. Its elegantly streamlined mouthfeel and accessible freshness point to a wine that will improve with time.”
Tenuta San Guido was born from the visionary zeal of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, a Tuscan landowner whose passion for agriculture and fine wine drove him to experiment with grape varieties that were entirely unconventional in Tuscany at the time. In the early 1940s, Mario recognized that the gravelly, stony soils of his Bolgheri estate bore a striking resemblance to the winegrowing terroirs of Bordeaux, and he took a daring step by planting Cabernet Sauvignon vines where native Italian varieties had always predominated. For years, his Cabernet-based blend—later named Sassicaia—was produced solely for family and close friends, a private expression of his pursuit of excellence in winemaking. It was his son, Nicolò Incisa della Rocchetta, who helped transform this passion project into a commercial triumph; by the late 1960s Nicolò persuaded his father to release the 1968 vintage publicly, setting in motion a legacy that redefined not only the estate but the entire Bolgheri region. Over subsequent decades, Nicolò balanced tradition with enterprise, expanding vineyard plantings and refining winemaking techniques, all while safeguarding the family’s heritage and values. Today, Tenuta San Guido remains under the stewardship of the Incisa della Rocchetta family, with successive generations working alongside skilled professionals to steward the estate’s vineyards and wines. Their commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and continuity has ensured that the estate’s wines, from iconic Sassicaia to second wines like Guidalberto, continue to be revered worldwide. What began as one man’s personal pursuit of a particular “bouquet” has become a defining chapter in the story of modern Italian wine.
At the heart of Tenuta San Guido’s philosophy lies a deep respect for terroir, tradition, and the harmonious relationship between man and nature. The estate’s guiding idea is to produce wines that authentically express the unique soils, microclimate, and Mediterranean influences of Bolgheri, rather than simply crafting products that adhere to transient trends or superficial stylistic conventions. This begins in the vineyard, where meticulous agronomic practices, careful manual selection of grapes, and a focus on low yields ensure that only the highest-quality fruit enters the cellar. Winemaking is approached with precision and restraint, favoring techniques that accentuate the natural character of each vintage while preserving balance, structure, and depth of flavor. Indigenous yeasts are often employed during fermentation to further enhance the connection between the wine and its place of origin, and every decision—from vineyard to bottle—is shaped by a pursuit of authenticity and integrity. The estate’s leaders believe that great wine does not stem from flashy manipulation, but from patience, observation, and an almost artisanal devotion to craft. This philosophy also encompasses a broader stewardship of the land; conservation of the estate’s ecosystem, respect for tradition, and continuity of family values are as central to their mission as the pursuit of excellence in each bottle. In rejecting shortcuts and superficiality, Tenuta San Guido strives to create wines that are not only expressive and refined but that also capture the soul of Bolgheri with every vintage.
