Sailor Seeks Horse One Monkey Pinot Noir 2019

Unlike the 2020 bushfires ravaging mainland Australia, Tasmania had their fair of smoke and bushfire issues in 2019. A month of thick smoke blanketed their vineyard and before the harvest could even start, it was over. Luckily the vineyard was not lost but the 2019 vintage from their Huon vineyard was gone. Rather than calling it a day, the sought help from friends and other vineyards across the island, and for this pinot noir they sourced fruit from Bird Vineyard in Pipers River owned by Pipers Brook, Joe Holyman’s new block, Goaty Hill, Ghost Rock, and Clover Hill. 

50% of the Bird vineyard portion was whole-bunch fermented with the rest destemmed and whole berries used. The high proportion of 114 (naturally red-fruited) from a cooler part of the state (Piper’s Brook) and whole bunch means there is a savoury edge reminiscent of their own vineyard combined with a perfumed delicacy. The wine was filtered but unfined and they produced about 5100 bottles.
