Rockford Vine Vale Riesling 2021
Rockford is undoubtedly an icon, and the wines some of the most sought after in all of Australia.
The Rockford reds get so much attention that the whites fly under the radar. In some ways that’s a shame but the upside is that they remain terrific value for the quality on offer. This Barossa Valley floor Riesling is built in a different idiom to the taught, piercing styles typical of the higher Eden and Clare Valleys. Here there is palate weight, softness and generosity; richer brown lime and ripe citrus notes backed by gentle acidity. A unique style of Riesling with a proven track record in the cellar, but hard to resist for its freshness now.
Straw yellow in colour, and rich and nutty. Lemongrass, lemon barley, honey, maybe aniseed, even. It’s pretty steely, but ripe in flavour, almost juicy, chalk dust texture, wheatgerm and a dry crunch to the finish, again a sort of honey nut and preserved lemon aftertaste. Old school style here, and very different from the mainstream, but good. - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front, 93 Points
