Classical structure and estate tradition define this benchmark expression of Barolo from one of Piemonte’s most historic producers. The 2021 Pio Cesare Barolo Pio is drawn from a selection of family-owned vineyards across Serralunga d’Alba, Grinzane Cavour, La Morra and Novello, bringing together the power and elegance of the denomination. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with extended skin contact to extract structure while preserving aromatic purity.

The wine is then matured for an extended period in large French oak botti with a small proportion in barriques, a combination that refines tannins without overt oak influence. In the glass it shows impressive clarity and depth, expressing Nebbiolo’s characteristic transparency of site. Aromas unfold gradually rather than revealing layers of red fruit, rose petal and earthy complexity. The palate is firm yet composed, supported by vibrant acidity and finely knit tannins that promise longevity. The 2021 vintage in Barolo is noted for balance and precision, and this bottling captures both energy and classical proportion. It is a wine suited to decanting in youth and extended cellaring, pairing beautifully with braised meats, truffle dishes and aged cheeses.

“A firm, focused Barolo with aromas of cherries, rose petals and orange peel. Medium to full body, fine tannins and a bright, persistent finish. Very classic in style and built to age.”

      Pio Cesare

Founded in 1881 in the town of Alba, Pio Cesare is one of Piedmont’s historic, family-owned wine estates and remains among the region’s most recognisable traditional producers. The house was established by Cesare Pio, an early advocate of exporting Barolo beyond Italy at a time when the wines of the Langhe were still largely local. Today the winery is run by the fifth generation of the family, continuing an unbroken lineage of ownership that is increasingly rare in Barolo and Barbaresco. The estate owns vineyards across many of the appellation’s most important crus, complemented by long-term relationships with trusted growers whose fruit has been sourced for generations. Their cellars sit in the ancient centre of Alba, where historic underground tunnels and ageing caves provide ideal natural conditions for maturation. Pio Cesare produces a full range of classic Piedmont wines including Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto and a small selection of whites, all made with a consistent house style rooted in balance and longevity. The winery has long represented a bridge between traditional and modern Barolo, respecting heritage methods while embracing careful refinement in vineyard and cellar practices. Through decades of international presence, the estate helped introduce and establish Piedmont’s wines on the global fine-wine stage and remains a benchmark reference producer for the region.
