Elegance and aromatic finesse distinguish this classic Barbaresco from one of Piemonte’s most established family estates. The 2021 Pio Cesare Barbaresco Pio is sourced from estate vineyards in Treiso and San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, areas known for producing Nebbiolo of perfume and refinement. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel with extended maceration to develop structure while preserving varietal clarity.

The wine is then matured in a combination of large French oak botti and a small proportion of barriques, a method that polishes tannins without obscuring the character of the fruit. In the glass it shows a luminous garnet hue typical of traditionally made Nebbiolo. Aromatically it opens gradually, revealing red berries, florals and delicate savoury complexity. Compared with Barolo, the structure is slightly softer but no less serious, offering earlier approachability while retaining ageing potential. The 2021 vintage emphasises purity, freshness and balance, giving a poised and expressive interpretation of the appellation. This is a versatile gastronomic wine, pairing beautifully with roasted poultry, veal, mushroom risotto and aged cheeses.

      Pio Cesare

Founded in 1881 in the town of Alba, Pio Cesare is one of Piedmont’s historic, family-owned wine estates and remains among the region’s most recognisable traditional producers. The house was established by Cesare Pio, an early advocate of exporting Barolo beyond Italy at a time when the wines of the Langhe were still largely local. Today the winery is run by the fifth generation of the family, continuing an unbroken lineage of ownership that is increasingly rare in Barolo and Barbaresco. The estate owns vineyards across many of the appellation’s most important crus, complemented by long-term relationships with trusted growers whose fruit has been sourced for generations. Their cellars sit in the ancient centre of Alba, where historic underground tunnels and ageing caves provide ideal natural conditions for maturation. Pio Cesare produces a full range of classic Piedmont wines including Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto and a small selection of whites, all made with a consistent house style rooted in balance and longevity. The winery has long represented a bridge between traditional and modern Barolo, respecting heritage methods while embracing careful refinement in vineyard and cellar practices. Through decades of international presence, the estate helped introduce and establish Piedmont’s wines on the global fine-wine stage and remains a benchmark reference producer for the region.
