Precision and perfume define this single-vineyard Barbaresco from the historic Il Bricco estate in Treiso, one of Pio Cesare’s most important holdings. The 2021 Barbaresco Il Bricco di Treiso is produced from Nebbiolo grown on calcareous marl soils at higher elevation, a site that consistently delivers aromatic lift and finely etched structure.
Fermentation is carried out in stainless steel with extended skin contact to achieve depth while retaining varietal purity. The wine is then matured in a combination of large French oak botti and a small proportion of barriques, a traditional approach that refines tannins without overt wood influence.
In the glass it shows a bright garnet colour typical of classically styled Nebbiolo. Aromatically it opens gradually, revealing red berries, rose petal and subtle mineral complexity. The palate is poised and linear, showing more finesse than weight, supported by vibrant acidity and polished tannins. The 2021 vintage highlights clarity and balance, offering approachability with the capacity for graceful ageing. It is particularly suited to veal, roasted poultry, porcini mushrooms and aged cheeses.

“Perfumed and focused with aromas of red berries, roses and citrus peel. Medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins and bright acidity giving precision and length. Very elegant and structured.”
Founded in 1881 in the town of Alba, Pio Cesare is one of Piedmont’s historic, family-owned wine estates and remains among the region’s most recognisable traditional producers. The house was established by Cesare Pio, an early advocate of exporting Barolo beyond Italy at a time when the wines of the Langhe were still largely local. Today the winery is run by the fifth generation of the family, continuing an unbroken lineage of ownership that is increasingly rare in Barolo and Barbaresco. The estate owns vineyards across many of the appellation’s most important crus, complemented by long-term relationships with trusted growers whose fruit has been sourced for generations. Their cellars sit in the ancient centre of Alba, where historic underground tunnels and ageing caves provide ideal natural conditions for maturation. Pio Cesare produces a full range of classic Piedmont wines including Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera, Dolcetto and a small selection of whites, all made with a consistent house style rooted in balance and longevity. The winery has long represented a bridge between traditional and modern Barolo, respecting heritage methods while embracing careful refinement in vineyard and cellar practices. Through decades of international presence, the estate helped introduce and establish Piedmont’s wines on the global fine-wine stage and remains a benchmark reference producer for the region.
Pio Cesare’s philosophy is built on expressing the identity of the Langhe rather than showcasing winemaking technique. The estate believes that Nebbiolo, more than most grape varieties, should communicate site, soil and vintage, and therefore the role of the producer is to guide rather than dominate the wine. Fruit is sourced from multiple carefully selected vineyards to create balance, structure and complexity, a traditional blending approach that reflects how Barolo was historically crafted. In the cellar, fermentation and ageing are designed to preserve aromatic purity and structure, combining classic large oak casks with measured use of smaller barrels to maintain harmony rather than overt oak character. The house prioritises longevity, aiming for wines that evolve gracefully over decades instead of being shaped only for early accessibility. Vineyard work focuses on careful selection, sustainable practices and moderate yields so that concentration comes naturally from the vines rather than from manipulation. Across both reds and whites, freshness and precision are valued just as highly as power, ensuring elegance remains central to the style. Ultimately, the goal is consistency: wines that faithfully represent Piedmont year after year while still reflecting the personality of each vintage.
Rose petal, raspberry and wild strawberry layered with violet, orange peel and delicate spice.
Medium-bodied with red cherry and cranberry flavours supported by fresh acidity and fine, silky tannins.
Long finish marked by tea leaf, mineral nuances and lingering dried rose notes.
