Fresh raspberry fruit, mineral precision and finely judged restraint define the Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Monthélie 1er Cru Les Riottes Rouge 2024. Produced from Pinot Noir, this small-production red Burgundy comes from the Premier Cru climat of Les Riottes within the Monthélie appellation of the Côte de Beaune. Les Riottes occupies gently sloping terrain near the Combe Danay, with an easterly exposure that allows the vines to receive the morning sun. Its soils contain a substantial proportion of Bathonian clay, providing useful water retention while contributing structure and depth to the resulting wine. Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is primarily celebrated for Chardonnay, making this limited Pinot Noir an especially distinctive part of the domaine’s range. The 2024 Les Riottes was fully destemmed and was vinified under the direction of Mathis Colin-Morey, the son of Pierre-Yves Colin and Caroline Morey.

The domaine’s 2024 red wines were handled with gentle extraction and no new oak, preserving the light fruit profile and natural freshness of the cooler growing season. Yields for the reds were approximately 25 hectolitres per hectare, reflecting the challenging conditions experienced throughout Burgundy in 2024. The Les Riottes sample displayed pure raspberry fruit accompanied by a distinctly cool, stony character. Its palate emphasised clarity and mineral definition rather than richness or heavy extraction. A saline quality brought focus to the finish and extended the wine’s delicate fruit character. The overall expression is light, precise and finely controlled, showing no evident green or underripe character despite the cool vintage. This elegant Premier Cru Pinot Noir should pair particularly well with roast duck, poultry, pork, mushroom dishes, charcuterie and softly matured cheeses.

      Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey

The Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey estate was born in 2001 from the association of Pierre-Yves Colin (son of Marc) and Caroline Morey (daughter of Jean-Marc). Today they operate 13 hectares in the villages of Saint-Aubin, Chassagne-Montrachet, Santenay, Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault. Their production consists of 92% Chardonnay, 5% Pinot Noir and 3% of Aligoté grape variety. Working about 2 hectares from the family heritage, the other plots have come from different acquisitions over the last fifteen years, as well as a few plots in Fermages.

Established as one of the young rising stars of Burgundy, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey in 2005 left his family Domaine, Marc Colin, where he gained a solid reputation for his outstanding white wines. Pierre-Yves took control of a share of the family vineyards (Domaine Marc Colin) from 2006 vintage. His first vintages have been made from vineyards and growers that he works closely with buying the wine as must and aging the wines in barrels which he has supplied. If the resulting wines meet his standards the barrels of wine purchased are then matured in his own cold cellar below his house in Chassagne Montrachet.

“This is not just one of the top domaines in the Cote de Beaune in Burgundy, Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey is now well recognised as one of the greatest winemakers and domaines in the world. Consistently producing benchmark wines in each vintage.”
