Product Description:
Heritage, structure, and quiet authority define this mature expression from Penfolds. The Bin 95 Grange Shiraz 1986 reflects the enduring legacy of Max Schubert, whose pioneering vision established Grange as a benchmark for Australian fine wine. Sourced from carefully selected vineyards across South Australia, the wine embodies Penfolds’ multi-regional blending philosophy, crafted for longevity and depth. The 1986 vintage followed a warm growing season, producing fruit of concentration and structure, built to age over decades.
In the glass, the wine shows a deep garnet core with brick hues at the rim, signalling maturity while retaining presence. Aromatically, it reveals evolved layers of dark fruit, spice, leather, and earthy complexity. The palate is firm yet harmonious, with structured tannins now softened through age, supporting a core of savoury and dried fruit character. Oak influence is fully integrated, contributing subtle spice and depth without overshadowing the wine’s identity. There is a composed power here, with the wine unfolding gradually and maintaining balance across the palate. This is a contemplative Grange, best appreciated slowly, offering both historical depth and refined complexity. It pairs beautifully with braised meats, game, or aged cheeses, while also standing confidently on its own.

Reviews & Accolades
“The 1986 Grange is a very good, but not exceptional example of Grange. It exhibits a saturated dark ruby color, and a big, smoky, earthy, cassis and licorice-scented nose. Medium to full-bodied, with firm tannin and a solid finish, it is best drunk over the next decade.” — Robert Parker, 88 points
“Medium to deep brick colored, the 1986 Grange gives aromas of dried mulberries, baked plums and spice cake with hints of leather, tobacco and earth. Medium-bodied, the palate is lively with a good backbone of acidity and a chewy texture, finishing long and savoury.” — Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 92 points
