Penfolds has a rich history dating back to 1844 when Dr. Christopher and Mary Penfold arrived in Australia with a vine cutting and a bold vision. They purchased 500 acres of land in South Australia and began producing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. Christopher's planting of vines and his philosophies continue to influence Penfolds to this day. Mary Penfold, the unsung chief of Penfolds, played a significant role in the winery's experimentations, growth and winemaking philosophies. Max Schubert became the company's first Chief Winemaker in 1948 and created the long-lasting Penfolds Grange in the 1950s. The tradition of 'bin wines' began in 1959 with Kalimna Bin 28 becoming the first official Penfolds Bin number wine. Penfolds continues to innovate, with the release of the rare 2004 Kalimna Block Cabernet Sauvignon in 2012 and the 170th anniversary celebration in 2014. Today, Penfolds remains one of Australia's most famed and respected winemakers, driven by generations of visionaries and innovators who strive for excellence in winemaking.

Penfolds Bin 23 is a distinctively styled wine that was first vintaged in 2009. Its name is derived from the Pinot Noir maturation location 'Cellar 23' at Magill Estate. This wine is especially made for Penfolds drinkers who enjoy rich, mouth-filling wines with plenty of fruit generosity and flavour length. The wine is a testament to the winery's commitment to creating wines that are both rich and complex. The Pinot Noir grapes used in this wine are sourced from multiple cool-climate regions, resulting in a unique flavor profile that is both bold and dynamic. The use of high-quality fruit and the winery's attention to detail in the winemaking process have resulted in a wine that is both elegant and complex. The Penfolds Bin 23 is a distinctive and richly flavored wine that reflects the winery's commitment to quality and excellence.

Penfolds Bin 23 Pinot Noir 2022 is a remarkable light-bodied wine that showcases the perfect balance between complexity and delicacy. Matured in French oak barriques for 35%, this wine is aged to perfection. The vintage conditions in Tasmania were exceptional, with lower yields due to lower spring temperatures and gusty winds during flowering. Warmer summer temperatures prevailed throughout the season, providing optimal conditions during veraison ensuring no disease pressure. The bunch weights were below average, but the quality was outstanding in both company and grower vineyards. Penfolds Bin 23 Pinot Noir 2022 has a candy strawberry red color that sparkles in the glass, hinting at the delightful flavors that await. The nose is tantalizingly complex, with dark cherries, strawberry sorbet and barberries providing an enticing aromatic lift that is supported by the oak-char nuance. Earthy forest floor, bramble and truffle notes add depth and complexity, while savory notes of cold lamb, capocollo and pimento-stuffed olives in brine provide a counterbalance. Wet slate and river pebbles round out this delightfully aromatic profile. On the palate, this wine has a lovely texture, with fine delicate tannins and just ripe phenolics. The steely acidity drives the length, providing a succulent minerality. Cherry pips, sour cherry and cranberry flavors are complemented by an Aperol-like bitterness on the finish, providing a seductive experience that beckons a second glass. Penfolds Bin 23 Pinot Noir 2022 is an incredibly versatile wine, perfect for pairing with food, especially duck and other game dishes. It is drinking beautifully now but will continue to develop its flavor profile until 2031, making it a fantastic addition to any wine collection.
