Elegant concentration and finely tuned structure define this expressive Central Otago Pinot Noir from one of Bannockburn’s benchmark producers. The 2024 Mt. Difficulty Bannockburn Pinot Noir captures the rugged beauty and continental climate of Central Otago, a region celebrated for producing Pinot Noir of purity, savoury complexity and vibrant natural acidity. Sourced from estate vineyards across the Bannockburn subregion, the wine reflects the schist-rich soils, dramatic temperature shifts and low rainfall that contribute to the area’s distinctive character. The 2024 growing season delivered excellent ripening conditions, resulting in fruit with both intensity and freshness, allowing the wine to retain precision while developing impressive depth of flavour.

In the glass the wine is layered and perfumed, opening with dark cherry, wild berry and plum aromas accented by baking spice, dried herbs and subtle floral lift. The palate is supple yet structured, combining ripe fruit concentration with earthy undertones and finely woven tannins. Careful oak maturation in French barrels contributes texture and spice while preserving the clarity and energy of the fruit. Bannockburn’s signature mineral edge and vibrant acidity provide lift and drive through the wine, balancing its generosity and ensuring finesse on the finish. The 2024 vintage continues Mt. Difficulty’s reputation for producing Pinot Noir with both immediate appeal and excellent cellaring potential. Refined yet approachable, this wine pairs beautifully with duck, mushroom dishes, roasted lamb or charcuterie.

“A focused, linear and balanced pinot noir with red berries, sliced strawberries and baking spices on the nose. Medium-bodied with fine tannins.”

      — James Suckling, 92 points, 2025

“Great aromatic core with scents of smoky oak and dark raspberry, plum and black cherry flesh then baking spices of clove and vanilla. Complex and youthful. A dry wine with flavours of spice and savoury baked red berry fruits. Plums and raspberry, plenty of tannins and acidity deliver a textured complex wine with great drinking from day of purchase through 2030+.”

      Mt. Difficulty

Mt Difficulty was born in Bannockburn in the early 1990s when five vineyard owners—known as the “Gang of Four”—shook hands on a partnership that would change the course of Central Otago wine. Their first Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, released under the Mt Difficulty label in 1998, immediately signalled the promise of the region and set the stage for a new benchmark in New Zealand winemaking. By 2004, Mt Difficulty Wines Ltd was formally established, with most of the original vineyards brought into company ownership.

For two decades, winemaker Matt Dicey was central to shaping the house style, building a reputation for deeply expressive Pinot Noir and finely tuned white varietals. In 2021, South Australian-born Greg Lane took the helm as Chief Winemaker. With global experience spanning France, Italy, the United States, and New Zealand, Lane brings both technical mastery and a deep respect for Central Otago’s singular terroir. Named New Zealand Young Winemaker of the Year in 2018, he continues to guide Mt Difficulty with a steady focus on precision, purity, and site expression.
