A measured and timeless expression of Yarra Valley Cabernet tradition. The 2018 Mount Mary Quintet represents the pinnacle of the estate’s craft and the enduring vision of its founder, Dr John Middleton. First conceived as the defining wine for Mount Mary, Quintet remains a benchmark for Australian interpretations of the classic Bordeaux blend. The 2018 vintage captures the balance, structure, and poise that have come to define this iconic cuvée, revealing the purity and harmony that only mature vines and a seasoned hand can deliver.
Comprising Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, and Petit Verdot, the 2018 release draws from low-yielding estate vines grown on the gentle slopes of the Yarra Valley. Each parcel was fermented separately in open vats before being matured for nearly two years in a mix of new and seasoned French oak. The result is a wine of medium weight yet remarkable concentration, its seamless texture carried by layers of dark fruit, violet, cocoa, and fine, persistent tannins.
Every element in the glass reflects Mount Mary’s signature approach, restrained alcohol, clarity of fruit, and tannin architecture designed for longevity. The 2018 Quintet stands among the most complete releases from this revered estate, showing immediate finesse and the potential for graceful evolution through the 2040s.

Blackcurrant, cherry, raspberry, violet, an empty box of chocolates, and subtle leafy perfume. Medium-bodied, deft delivery of intense small-berried red and black fruit, fine carbon tannin, and a supremely long and fresh finish.
This is a great edition of this standard bearer for elegant Yarra Valley claret. The nose is detailed and fresh … The palate has such expressiveness … The greatest Quintet ever? Certainly in my lifetime!
Stands proudly at the head of the Mount Mary portfolio… each variety handled according to its structure … Mesmerisingly silky, with a kaleidoscope of fruit and secondary flavours.
Mount Mary Wines was founded by John and Marli Middleton in 1971, driven by a passion for producing fine, elegant wines that reflect the best qualities of French varietals. Having been inspired by their travels to Bordeaux and Burgundy in the 1960s, they sought to bring the same level of refinement and low-alcohol elegance to Australian wines. John Middleton, particularly motivated by a desire to craft a distinctive, refined Australian Cabernet, found the perfect site in the Yarra Valley for their dream project. Their vision led to the establishment of one of the most iconic wineries in the region, with Mount Mary continuing to be a family-owned estate that upholds a commitment to excellence. Today, the winery remains dedicated to producing handcrafted wines made from estate-grown fruit, ensuring full control over the quality and character of each bottle.
Nestled in the heart of the Yarra Valley, the Mount Mary estate spans 40 acres and boasts a diverse range of soil types, from clay-rich loams to gravelly, ironstone soils. The vineyard is planted with 18 varieties, with an emphasis on classic Bordeaux and Burgundy varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. The region’s cool climate and unique terroir contribute to the slow, even ripening of the grapes, creating wines with exceptional balance and complexity. While not certified organic or biodynamic, Mount Mary’s vineyard philosophy emphasises sustainability and environmental stewardship. Practices such as minimal machinery use, composting, mulching, and cover cropping are employed to improve soil health, increase biodiversity, and reduce chemical use. By focusing on long-term sustainability, Mount Mary aims to produce wines that reflect the true character of the land while preserving it for future generations. The vineyard’s commitment to quality is evident in every bottle, ensuring that the wines consistently express the unique Yarra Valley terroir.
Aromas of cassis, cherry, and plum intertwined with violet, tobacco, graphite, and cocoa.
Medium-bodied with concentrated red and black fruits, fine-grained tannins, and a discreet savoury thread of dried herbs and cedar.
Elegant and enduring, the finish lingers with redcurrant, spice, and a hint of earthy minerality.
