Textural, saline and finely structured from one of Australia’s oldest Chenin sites. The 2024 MMAD Chenin Blanc comes from dry-grown bush vines planted in 1964 at Blewitt Springs, McLaren Vale. Set in deep Maslin sands over ironstone and cooled by afternoon sea breezes from the Gulf St Vincent, this elevated vineyard produces fruit of rare definition and clarity.

Harvested by hand and split between whole-bunch pressing and gentle crushing, the juice was fermented with indigenous yeasts in a mix of concrete and seasoned French oak. Extended time on lees brought depth without dulling the natural energy. No new oak was used, allowing the site’s stony minerality and saline lift to remain at the fore. This is a precise and quietly complex wine that delivers both tension and breadth, shaped by one of the country’s most expressive old-vine vineyards.

      Trusted by the professionals

Aromatically dense … central core of red apple, spices and ripe stone fruits, pear and a touch of marzipan … already, there are emerging honey notes … spice, marzipan and ginger adding layer to citrus, apple and pear

      — WinePilot (Jeni Port), 96 pts

Made in the pursuit of both texture and flavour … pepper, metal, brine, cooked apple, preserved citrus and nut-like characters … whispers of Vietnamese mint.

      — The Wine Front (Campbell Mattinson), 94 pts

Half crushed and half whole-bunch pressed fruit, fermentation in concrete and large oak, then maturation in old puncheons. An orchard stroll … red apples and green pear, citrus, poached apple, hazelnut, preserved lemon … a thread of mineral tension is the plot line

      — Halliday Wine Companion (Marcus Ellis), 96 pts

      MMAD

MMAD Vineyard is the creative collaboration of four respected figures in Australian wine: Martin Shaw, Adam Wadewitz, Michael Hill-Smith MW, and David LeMire MW. Each brings deep expertise from decades in viticulture, winemaking, and global wine trade. The initials of their first names—M, M, A, and D—form the winery’s name, symbolizing their shared vision and equal partnership. The team’s base is in McLaren Vale, South Australia, specifically in the Blewitt Springs subregion, renowned for its sandy soils and old vines. Adam Wadewitz, also chief winemaker at Shaw + Smith, leads the winemaking at MMAD, applying precision and restraint to express the purity of fruit and the character of the vineyard. The group’s collective experience allows them to unite traditional craftsmanship with modern sensitivity, producing wines that speak directly of place rather than process.
