Organic and biodynamic viticulture, single-vineyard character and generous texture define the Millton Opou Chardonnay 2023. The wine is produced from the historic Opou Vineyard in Manutuke, within New Zealand’s Gisborne wine region. Annie Millton’s father, John Clark, established vineyards at Opou during the late 1960s, with Chardonnay planted there in 1969. James and Annie Millton later founded The Millton Vineyard in 1984 after gaining winemaking experience in France and Germany. Millton describes its signature collection as a range of varietal-specific, single-vineyard wines designed to express their individual sites. The clay-rich soils of Opou are associated with concentrated, expressive and creamy Chardonnay.

The 2023 release opens with floral aromas of orange and white blossom, accompanied by honeyed and gently nutty nuances. These aromas lead into a clean and fresh palate that retains an appealing softness and rounded texture. As the wine develops in the glass, the mouthfeel becomes increasingly broad and harmonious. Cleansing acidity provides definition and prevents its creamy richness from becoming heavy. Fine, silken tannins add subtle structure and contribute to the wine’s persistent finish.

      Millton Vineyards

Millton Vineyards & Winery, founded by James and Annie Millton in 1984, was New Zealand’s first certified organic and biodynamic wine estate. Located on the banks of the Te Arai River near Manutuke, Gisborne, the winery draws on the rich history of viticulture in the region, dating back to 1871 when the first settlers planted vines. The Milltons, with their international experience in renowned wine regions such as Champagne, Bordeaux, and Rheinhessen, brought their expertise and vision back to Gisborne to create wines that truly reflect the region’s terroir.

Millton’s focus on organic and biodynamic principles has earned them international acclaim for their distinctive, terroir-driven wines. Over the years, their dedication to quality and sustainability has led to a series of award-winning releases, with their Chenin Blanc particularly standing out as a New World classic. The Milltons are proud members of prestigious wine groups such as "La Renaissance des Appellations" and "The Family of Twelve," and their wines are featured in fine dining establishments around the world.
