Power, precision and iconic pedigree define the Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay 2021, a benchmark Margaret River Chardonnay presented here in a collectable 1.5L magnum. The Art Series represents Leeuwin Estate’s most opulent and age-worthy tier, combining carefully selected estate fruit with commissioned Australian artwork on every label. Fruit for this wine is sourced primarily from Block 20, planted in 1976, with additional fruit from Block 22, planted in 1978. Both vineyard blocks are planted to the Gingin Chardonnay clone, renowned in Margaret River for producing low yields, concentrated flavours and naturally firm acidity. The grapes were barrel fermented in new French oak barriques, followed by approximately eleven months of maturation before the final wine was assembled. Although the oak contribution is substantial, the concentration and energy of the fruit allow it to remain integrated rather than dominant. The challenging 2021 growing season required careful vineyard management because of intermittent rainfall, yet Chardonnay emerged as one of the region’s strongest-performing varieties.

The resulting wine combines remarkable fruit density with a precise, linear structure and an elegant mineral character. Fresh lime, nashi pear, nectarine and white peach form the core of the wine, supported by grapefruit, lemon pith and mandarin peel. Toasted cashew and subtle oak-derived spice contribute richness without obscuring the wine’s freshness. The palate is energetic and finely poised, with natural acidity bringing clarity and direction through its concentrated fruit. Saline, wet-stone and phyllitic mineral notes add savoury complexity and reinforce its Margaret River identity. Despite its power, the wine retains an ethereal quality, with its components arranged around a firm and focused frame. The finish is exceptionally long, carrying citrus, stone fruit and mineral elements with sustained intensity. Bottled at 13.5% ABV under screwcap, the magnum format provides additional potential for slow and graceful development in the cellar.

      Leeuwin Estate

Leeuwin Estate stands as one of the premier wineries in Margaret River, Australia, renowned for producing wines that rank alongside the finest in the world. The estate was established in 1973 when Denis and Tricia Horgan, inspired by the mentorship of Napa Valley’s legendary winemaker Robert Mondavi, transformed their cattle farm into a vineyard. The first commercial vintage was released in 1979, and Leeuwin quickly garnered global recognition when its Art Series Chardonnay was highly recommended by Decanter Magazine in 1981.

Today, the estate is still owned and operated by the founding Horgan family, with three generations working alongside a dedicated team of viticulturists and winemakers. The focus remains on crafting site-expressive wines of exceptional quality, with a strong commitment to precision in every aspect of their production process. Leeuwin Estate’s signature Art Series wines—Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon—are regarded as some of Australia’s finest, achieving both critical acclaim and the highest accolades in the wine world.
