Black-fruited, poised and quietly powerful from the first glass. The 2022 JC Block Shiraz is drawn from 50-year-old vines rooted in dark grey siltstone and ironstone rubble, facing south-west at 120 metres elevation. This is the most fruit-driven expression in the Koomilya range, yet it carries the same structural integrity and longevity that defines Stephen Pannell’s flagship site in McLaren Vale. The block is named for Jill Cant, the previous custodian of the land and a figure connected to Stephen’s earliest work here as Chief Red Winemaker at Hardy’s.

The palate moves from delicacy to intensity with understated force. Black fruits, quince paste and red currant meet savoury tones of chorizo, paprika and hickory, carried by tannins that expand slowly and with precision. A wine of balance and intent, the JC Block offers immediate pleasure with the shape and structure for long cellaring.

      Trusted by the professionals

The JC has a distinct shape, a harmony, an engulfing perfume, a blend of flavour depth with spice and dusky florals, and an effortlessness … It’s suffused with place, the bush-fringed site, with a sense of fallen gums subsumed into the soil, intertwining with the ripe but not juicy deep red fruits, along with a rusty iron note, salumi and panforte. As said, one of Australia’s great wines

      — Marcus Ellis, Halliday Wine Companion – 99 points

Structured and serious, but it still feels fresh and balanced rather than heavy. Whole berries, wild ferment, long time on skins, big old oak … the tannins are beautifully fine but firm, giving it structure without ever feeling heavy.” Halliday Wine Companion Panel

      Koomilya

Koomilya is the passionate vineyard and wine-making project of iconic winemaker Stephen Pannell (often styled “Steve”), based in the revered McLaren Vale region of South Australia. Located on a historic 35-hectare estate at the end of Amery Road, the property includes ancient vines planted in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, set among native bushland and creek lines that frame the site with natural character. Steve and his wife Fiona acquired the vineyard in 2012 after many years of nurturing the vision, bringing to life a project deeply rooted in a sense of place, heritage, and craftsmanship. At Koomilya, the emphasis is on single-block expressions (such as the GT, JC and DC Blocks) and Shiraz is the flagship variety, though the estate also explores other Mediterranean and Iberian varieties. Vineyard practices are geared toward longevity, low intervention, and letting the site speak for itself.
