    Kanosuke Distillery is located along the beautiful white sands of Japan's longest beach. With a magnificent view of the East China Sea stretching out in front, this is the scenic location where 2nd generation president Kanosuke Komasa planned to build his dream distillery. Having inherited his desire to take on the next great adventure, it has become their home base for creating new whisky.

    The Kanosuke 2023 release is the distillery's first peated expression. Specifically, it's been made using peated malt distilled in 2018 and 2019, which were then aged in re-charred American white oak barrels that had previously held Mellowed Kozaru Shochu as well as ex-Sherry casks, before being bottled at cask strength of 59% abv.

    The aromas are of light peaty ashiness but aromatic, with only ever so slight medicinal notes. Largely driven by those ex-Sherry notes of spiced honey, mulled wine, cacao powder, fruitcake and also a touch of mint. Rich and intense with this light layer of charcoal. On the palate is an oily texture - again lightly medicinal and herbaceous - eucalyptus, mint and of cough syrup. This evolves into glutinous rice cakes, this lightly sweet rice flavour that's almost translucent. There are notes of cinnamon, spiced honey and apple pie filling, with a hint of milk chocolate sweetness. The finish is long and warming. Sweet spiced honey, more rice cake sweetness, with a little bit of candy corn. The light peat starts to come through again, with a little bit of that soot and ash.
