The Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett 2024 is an elegant off-dry Riesling from one of the Mosel’s most celebrated vineyard sites. It comes from the steep Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyard, situated across the Mosel River from the village of Wehlen and the historic Joh. Jos. Prüm estate. The vineyard rises dramatically above the river on slopes composed primarily of weathered grey-blue Devonian slate. Its south-to-southwest exposure, extended sunlight and proximity to the Mosel create favourable conditions for producing Riesling with fragrance, precision and pronounced mineral character.

The 2024 vintage delivers a graceful expression of the Kabinett style, combining delicate natural sweetness with vibrant acidity and a remarkably light presence. Aromatically, the wine reveals honeysuckle, fresh herbs, green apple, white peach and citrus fruit alongside cool slate and subtle floral nuances. The palate is light-bodied and serene, with mandarin, pale pomelo and orchard-fruit flavours supported by finely etched acidity. Its sweetness is seamlessly integrated, allowing the mineral structure and refreshing citrus character to remain clearly defined. At 8.5% alcohol, the wine possesses remarkable delicacy while retaining impressive flavour intensity and persistence. The finish is long, zesty and precise, leaving lingering notes of citrus, herbs and wet slate. Although already expressive, its acidity, balance and mineral structure suggest excellent potential for further development in bottle. It is a refined companion to shellfish, roast pork, poultry, lightly spiced Asian cuisine, fresh cheeses and delicate seafood dishes.

“Wonderfully expressive nose of honeysuckle and fresh garden herbs. Juicy, light-bodied palate with creaminess, slatey minerality and very elegant acidity. Long, zesty finish with plenty of mandarin orange character. Drink or hold.”

      — James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 94 Points

“The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabinett opens with subtle hints of creamy woodruff, candied angelica and wet slate. The palate is lightness itself, like a veil of scented fruit referencing green apple, supple, sweet but tart citrus, like juicy, pale pomelo, rounded out with a touch of white peach. It is wonderfully serene, cooling, elegant and precise.”

      — Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous, 94 Points

“Elegant and quietly complex, offering an off-dry profile that feels seamlessly integrated. A beautiful mix of nectarine and pear leads the nose and palate, joined by lemon–lime brightness and delicate elderflower. The acidity is vibrant yet silky, giving the wine lift without sharpness. Long, refined, and full of youthful charm. This is classic Wehlener Sonnenuhr Kabi: radiant, detailed, and already deeply expressive.”

      Joh Jos Prüm

The Prüm family story in the Mosel dates back to 1156, beginning with was Johann Josef Prüm (1873 - 1944) who founded the estate in 1911. By the mid-1930s Johann Josef’s son, Sebastian, forged the distinctive style of the Prüm wines. From 1969, the imitable Dr Manfred Prüm would elevate Joh. Jos. Prüm to even greater heights, today the estate is run by Manfred’s daughter Katharina Prüm who watches over 13.5 hectares of vines on the harrowing slate-rich slopes of the Middle Mosel. In The Wines of Germany, Stephen Brook writes “With the rise of so many excellent winemakers in the Mosel, one might have supposed that Joh. Jos. Prüm, with its profound conservatism, might have been overtaken and left behind. Not a bit of it. The Estate remains where it has been for decades: at the summit.” Which begs the question, what is the secret to J.J. Prüm's continued success? How do they stand out among top Mosel producers? It’s all about their exceptional vineyards: old vines at great sites, keeping the lowest yields, daring but calculated late harvesting, and a careful selection of the finest berries.

Joh. Jos. Prüm's vineyards are at forefront of the estate's success. Their holdings include vineyards - Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr. All of these sites are exclusively dedicated to growing and harvesting Riesling grapes for Joh. Jos. Depending on the specific vintage, the average annual production of wine is typically between 10,000 to 13,000 cases.
