The Joh. Jos. Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2024 is a finely concentrated sweet Riesling from one of the most celebrated vineyard sites in Germany’s Middle Mosel. Produced by the historic Joh. Jos. Prüm estate, it combines Auslese-level ripeness with the elegance, freshness and mineral precision traditionally associated with Wehlener Sonnenuhr. The southwest-facing vineyard is classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE® and rises steeply above the Mosel River opposite the village of Wehlen. Its deep, weathered grey slate soils and extremely steep slopes provide favourable conditions for Riesling, retaining warmth while offering excellent drainage. These distinctive conditions contribute to wines renowned for their aromatic delicacy, saline minerality and capacity for long development in bottle.

The grapes for the 2024 release were harvested by hand and underwent spontaneous fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. Harvest began on 1 October, with warmer conditions later in the month allowing selected grapes to achieve Auslese ripeness before picking concluded on 31 October. The wine opens with ripe peach, apricot and baked apple, accompanied by white flowers, bergamot, citrus peel and crushed-slate nuances. Its palate is velvety and concentrated, revealing golden peach and tropical fruit supported by vivid acidity and persistent saline minerality. Despite its sweetness and concentration, the wine remains filigreed, energetic and remarkably light on its feet. At only 7.5% alcohol, it possesses impressive flavour intensity without losing the graceful delicacy characteristic of fine Mosel Riesling. The finish is exceptionally long and precise, carrying citrus, ripe stone fruit and salty mineral notes. Its balance of sweetness, acidity and mineral structure provides excellent potential for extended bottle ageing. It is an elegant partner for Indian and Asian cuisine, soft cheeses, fruit-based dishes and delicately spiced poultry.

“The 2024 Riesling Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese, without any botrytis to speak of, flirts with peach bathed in orange zest with a gorgeous frisson of bergamot."

      — Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous, 97 Points

“The 2024 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Auslese offers a remarkably fine and sophisticated nose of crushed slate, salt, blackcurrant, peach and lemon rind.”

      — Stephan Reinhardt, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, 96 Points

“Opulent yet strikingly precise, this Auslese opens with layers of glazed apricot, white nectarine, and Meyer lemon curd. Subtle hints of orange blossom, pear jelly, and crystallized ginger weave through the aroma, giving it both lift and allure. The palate is silky and concentrated, with piercing acidity that threads through the sweetness and keeps everything effortlessly in balance. Mineral undertones add definition as it glides toward a long, radiant finish. A beautifully composed young sweet wine, with serious aging potential. Drink through 2050.”

      — Aleks Zecevic, Wine Enthusiast, 96 Points

      Joh Jos Prüm

The Prüm family story in the Mosel dates back to 1156, beginning with was Johann Josef Prüm (1873 - 1944) who founded the estate in 1911. By the mid-1930s Johann Josef’s son, Sebastian, forged the distinctive style of the Prüm wines. From 1969, the imitable Dr Manfred Prüm would elevate Joh. Jos. Prüm to even greater heights, today the estate is run by Manfred’s daughter Katharina Prüm who watches over 13.5 hectares of vines on the harrowing slate-rich slopes of the Middle Mosel. In The Wines of Germany, Stephen Brook writes “With the rise of so many excellent winemakers in the Mosel, one might have supposed that Joh. Jos. Prüm, with its profound conservatism, might have been overtaken and left behind. Not a bit of it. The Estate remains where it has been for decades: at the summit.” Which begs the question, what is the secret to J.J. Prüm's continued success? How do they stand out among top Mosel producers? It’s all about their exceptional vineyards: old vines at great sites, keeping the lowest yields, daring but calculated late harvesting, and a careful selection of the finest berries.

Joh. Jos. Prüm's vineyards are at forefront of the estate's success. Their holdings include vineyards - Wehlener Sonnenuhr, Graacher Himmelreich, Bernkasteler Lay, Bernkasteler Badstube and Zeltinger Sonnenuhr. All of these sites are exclusively dedicated to growing and harvesting Riesling grapes for Joh. Jos. Depending on the specific vintage, the average annual production of wine is typically between 10,000 to 13,000 cases.
