Single-vineyard Barossa Shiraz with depth, structure, and quiet authority. The 2023 Hentley Farm Clos Otto Shiraz is a flagship Shiraz from Barossa Valley, drawn exclusively from the historic Clos Otto vineyard. Planted by Otto Kasper from an old Shiraz clone, this small, meticulously managed site yields fruit of notable concentration and detail. The 2023 growing season delivered measured conditions, allowing ripeness and structure to develop in balance, resulting in a wine that speaks clearly of site and season.
In the glass, composure and depth define the wine. Dark fruit forms the core, framed by finely integrated oak and a structured tannin profile. The palate is full-bodied yet controlled, with a natural line of acidity providing lift and precision. There is a quiet intensity throughout, with layers of spice, savoury nuance, and mineral undertones unfolding gradually. Built with longevity in mind, it will reward cellaring while offering immediate appeal alongside slow-cooked lamb or spiced beef.

Deep crimson in the glass and deeply aromatic with glossy satsuma plum, blackberry, blueberry and boysenberry fruits. Hints of baking spices, roasting meats, violets, dark chocolate, some distant ferrous notes, nicely judged vanillin oak and earth. The wine sports a contemporary feel but it sings true to the Barossan hymn-sheet with heady fruit density and purity, a superfine, compact tannin array and a bright mineral line that lends detail and cadence as the wine trails away with a sense of latent power and grace. Jeez, Hentley Farm is making some cracking wines at the pointy end of its lineup.
Opulence, complexity and balance all come to mind when thinking about the Clos Otto Shiraz… With vines planted by previous owner Otto Kasper using a cutting from an ageing and secret Shiraz clone, and tended to with almost antique machinery and a well-practiced hand, the Clos Otto vineyard consistency yields super low quantities with ultra rich flavours.
Hentley Farm was established in 1997 by Keith and Alison Henschke with a singular vision: to craft exceptional single-estate wines from the Barossa Valley. With an Agricultural Science and Wine Marketing degree from Roseworthy College, Keith acquired extensive industry experience before seeking the perfect site in the Barossa, guided by advice from local experts to look for “red-brown soil over limestone.”
The extreme diversity of soil, aspect, and altitude at Hentley Farm required careful planning in terms of varietal and clone selection, row spacing, trellising, and water management. The estate vineyards feature Shiraz (70%), Grenache (17%), Cabernet Sauvignon (10%), Zinfandel (2%), and a small parcel of Viognier (0.5%). Their first wines were released in 2002.
Since 2008, Head Winemaker Andrew Quin has overseen Hentley Farm’s evolution, focusing on crafting modern wines from traditional Barossa varieties. The wines are varietally diverse, approachable in their youth, yet structured for extended cellaring. Under Andrew’s guidance, Hentley Farm has become one of Australia’s leading boutique wineries, earning accolades worldwide, including the 2015 James Halliday Winery of the Year.
At Hentley Farm, the philosophy is rooted in a deep respect for the land, with a strong focus on sustainable practices that prioritise the health of the vineyards and the preservation of the environment. The winery’s approach is based on the belief that great wine begins in the vineyard. By carefully managing the vineyard ecosystem, from the soil to the vine, the team at Hentley Farm ensures that every bottle reflects the true character of the Barossa Valley. Their focus on minimal intervention winemaking allows the fruit to express itself fully, without the need for excessive manipulation. The result is wines that are pure, complex, and true to their origin.
The winery also embraces a commitment to innovation, using both traditional and modern techniques to craft wines of exceptional quality. They employ sustainable farming practices, including cover cropping, soil health management, and water conservation, all of which help maintain the long-term viability of their estate. This holistic approach allows Hentley Farm to produce wines that are not only of the highest quality but also reflect their responsibility to the land and the environment. Whether it’s through their use of carefully selected oak or their focus on expressing the individuality of each vineyard block, Hentley Farm’s philosophy is evident in every bottle they produce.
