Head Red Shiraz 2023 is a Barossa Shiraz that brings together fruit from 10 vineyard sites across the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, balancing the region's generous character with notable freshness and detail. Ripe black cherry, plum and blackberry sit alongside cocoa, graphite and subtle savoury spice, while the palate is medium to full-bodied with a polished texture, fine acidity and layered tannins that carry the fruit with ease.

The cool 2023 season has given the wine an appealing sense of energy, allowing its dark fruit, smoked meat and wild herb notes to unfold with clarity rather than weight. Approachable in its youth yet built with enough structure to reward cellaring, it is a natural match for grilled lamb, slow-cooked beef or chargrilled mushrooms.

“The barrels used here were largely ex-Chardonnay, which is an interesting twist. The vineyards which provided the fruit – there were ten of them – are mostly higher altitude vineyards in the Eden Valley (60%) with the rest from the Barossa (40%). The vines are between 15 and 80 years of age. The wine includes 1% Viognier, which was co-fermented. Maturation was for a year and a half, with 5% of the wine doing time in new French barrels. A plum/purple hue, the nose is redolent of black cherries, graphite, cocoa powder, black fruits and ripe plums. Alluring perfumes abound. There is a line of fine acidity, good balance, a sleek texture and real persistence. The palate sees the emergence of dark chocolate and smoked meats. Love it. A ten year proposition. This is such great buying.”

      Head Wines

HEAD Wines is the creation of Alex Head, an Australian winemaker whose passion for wine was profoundly shaped by his travels through the great wine regions of Europe. In particular, the wines of France’s Northern Rhône Valley, including the celebrated Côte-Rôtie, inspired his appreciation for Shiraz that combines elegance, balance, complexity and a strong sense of place. Alex recognised that the diverse geology, elevation and climatic conditions of South Australia’s Barossa could provide an exceptional foundation for producing wines influenced by these Old World ideals while remaining distinctly Australian. Through HEAD Wines, he works with carefully selected vineyards across the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, seeking sites capable of expressing their individual character rather than producing a uniform regional style. His approach has established HEAD Wines as a producer focused on refined, site-driven Barossa wines, with Shiraz and Grenache playing particularly important roles in the portfolio. Rather than simply pursuing the richness traditionally associated with the Barossa, Alex aims to create wines that are beautifully balanced, expressive and unmistakably connected to their origins.
