Kilkerran Heavily Peated Cask Strength Batch 12 is a powerful Campbeltown single malt that leans fully into smoke, texture, and intensity. Distilled at Glengyle, this release departs from the distillery’s lightly peated core style, using malt peated to around 45 PPM to deliver a bold yet carefully balanced expression.

Matured predominantly in ex-bourbon casks with a small proportion of ex-sherry casks, the whisky highlights Kilkerran’s distinctive oily character and maritime influence. Coastal peat smoke leads the profile, supported by sweet vanilla oak, subtle dried fruit, and a saline minerality that keeps the whisky focused and structured. Bottled at natural cask strength of 58.4% ABV, it is presented without chill filtration or added colour.

Batch 12 has gained particular attention for its clarity and balance, with the peat seamlessly integrated into the spirit rather than over powering it. Best enjoyed slowly, neat or with a small splash of water, this is a confident and expressive release for lovers of heavily peated whisky with depth and precision.

A historic Campbeltown distillery reimagined in the 21st century, Glengyle Distillery was originally founded by William Mitchell, who had previously run Springbank Distillery with his brother John, under the direction of their father and founder of Springbank, Archibald Mitchell. A dispute between the two brothers, William and John, led the former to leave and start his own venture, Glengyle Distillery, in 1872. In 1919, Glengyle was sold to West Highland Malt Distilleries Ltd after suffering, as many distilleries did, from the economic downturn of the early 20th century. Production then completely ceased in 1925. Over the decades-long closure of the distillery, the buildings continued to be used by local clubs and companies and so the Glengyle buildings remained reasonably well-maintained compared to many other closed distilleries in Campbeltown.

In the year 2000, the distillery was purchased by Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd, headed by Hedley G Wright, then chairman of J&A Mitchell and great, great nephew of the original founder of Glengyle, William Mitchell. After his passing in 2023, Mr Wright’s shares in the company were transferred to three local trust funds to ensure that the community would continue to benefit from the company after his passing.

      Tasting notes

      NOSE
      Smoky and sea‑sprayed

Bold peat smoke rises alongside hints of brine, salted
caramel, cedar, dried fruit and a faint coastal iodine tang.

      PALATE
      Rich, oily and layered

A deep oily mouthfeel opens into waves of sweet vanilla and
caramel, dark malt, coastal brine, soot and earthy peat. Notes of smoked ham
and lingering barley sweetness add depth.

      FINISH
      Long, smoky and warming

Smoke and sea salt linger as soft wood spice and tobacco
emerge, leaving a clean yet intimidatingly powerful fade that quivers with peat
      embers and gentle bitterness.
