Distilled in 1971, this 50 year old expression represents a milestone in the near two-hundred-year history of The GlenDronach Distillery and is the oldest single malt GlenDronach has ever released.

This Glendronach 50 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky has matured patiently over five decades in rare Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks, from the Spanish bodegas of Jerez in Andalucía and has developed its deep natural colour over time from the Spanish oak in which it has rested. Personally selected by Master Blender Rachel Barrie, these exquisite casks have been married for a final maturation in a single PX cask. Only a small number of casks are chosen to reach such a celebrated age, with just 198 bottles released worldwide.

Every bottle of The GlenDronach Aged 50 years has been hand-numbered and is presented in a luxurious, genuine leather case accompanied by an embossed leather booklet detailing the distillery history, tasting notes, and unique craft. Bottle No. 1 of The GlenDronach Aged 50 Years was proudly donated to the inaugural Distillers’ One of One Auction in December 2021, raising over $75,000.

At 50 Years Old, this whisky is bottled at its natural cask strength of 43.8%, it is exceptionally rich and seductive, with mellow layers of alluring complexity. On the nose, ripe dark cherry and plum are the preludes to the harmony of rolling stone fruit, while the palate brings an exquisite overture of flavour with dense undertones of dark chocolate, tobacco, and cocoa.

    Bottle No: 182 of 198.

The oldest GlenDronach expression ever released, matured in two separate sherry casks—PX and oloroso—then married and finished in a single PX cask for 1 year. The age is apparent from the mahogany color. A sumptuous nose is laden with aged sherry and layers of baked dark fruits, black cherry, and peach pie. Wild berries and dark chocolate truffle cake punctuate the palate, with overtones of cigar box and rich espresso. (198 bottles) Collectibles.

    — WhiskyAdvocate.com, 95 Points

Rather crisp despite the earthy mushroom and soy notes, there is orange rind, sprinkles of lime zest, some polished leather, hazelnuts and a surprising touch of vanilla custard. Whiffs of oregano, sage and fennel followed by a drop of cough syrup. Finally some figs, plenty of plums and chocolate pralines. So many sensations at the same time. Almost too many. Sour, sweet, earthy. And umami. No oak tannins to speak of. Some aniseed, sweet miso paste and creamy chocolate, as well as some coffee beans and cranberries, followed by crushed mint and oranges. Finish: Gentle and medium in length with notes of cappuccino, dark chocolate and a whisper of fennel.

It has been a privilege to be the final custodian of our oldest expression to date, passed down through generations. The result is a hand-crafted Highland Single Malt that tells a story of rare dedication, of which The GlenDronach Aged 50 Years is the rarest of them all. The GlenDronach Aged 50 Years is the most prestigious expression of what this timeless, richly-sherried Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky has to offer

    The GlenDronach

The GlenDronach distillery, established in 1826 by James Allardice, has long been renowned for producing some of Scotland’s finest single malts. Nestled in the heart of Speyside, GlenDronach has maintained its commitment to quality and tradition over nearly two centuries of production. From its humble beginnings, the distillery quickly gained a reputation for creating rich, robust whiskies, primarily influenced by its signature use of sherry casks for maturation. Today, the distillery continues to operate using methods such as floor malting and direct-fire heating, ensuring each bottle is imbued with a deep, complex character that reflects its storied heritage.

The GlenDronach is crafted using the finest ingredients, including highland water drawn from the Balnoon hills’ natural springs and malted barley sourced from trusted local suppliers. The distillery’s hallmark is its fusion of bold Highland spirit with the exceptional Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso sherry casks from Spain’s Andalucía region, creating whisky that is both rich and full-bodied. This devotion to quality and tradition has earned The GlenDronach a place among the most respected distilleries in the world, with each release standing as a testament to the mastery of the craft.
