Ravera is widely regarded as the defining vineyard of Novello and one of Barolo’s most compelling crus. G.D. Vajra’s parcels lie within the vineyard’s southern amphitheatre, between 300 and 380 metres above sea level, where Tortonian marls converge with Serravallian sandstone and iron-rich clay. This complex geology shapes a Barolo of depth and gravitas, marked by dark mineral tones, layered texture, and a restrained intensity that unfolds slowly over time.
Harvest for the 2022 vintage took place on 4 October. Following triple manual sorting, fermentation occurred in custom vertical tanks with gentle extraction and 47 days of extended submerged-cap maceration. Spontaneous malolactic conversion followed the next spring before the wine matured for 22 months in large Slavonian oak casks of 25 and 50 hectolitres. Bottling was completed in May 2025.
The 2022 Ravera already shows remarkable composure in its youth. Structured yet finely detailed, it carries the hallmark tension and authority of the site, balancing savoury depth with precision and length. A Barolo built for extended cellaring, yet one that already speaks clearly of its pedigree and place.

Tea, hibiscus, orange rind, sandalwood and dried flowers. Really aromatic and absorbing. Medium-bodied, with a transparent, ethereal sense of fruit and a backbone of tannins that gives definition all the way to the end. Unique balance, from the famed vineyard in Novello. Better from 2029.
G.D. Vajra is one of Barolo’s most respected family-run estates, founded in 1972 by Aldo Vaira in the village of Vergne, the highest commune in the appellation. What began as a reluctant summer on the family farm turned into Aldo’s lifelong vocation, and by 1971 he had adopted organic farming — a first for Barolo at the time. Over the decades, the estate has grown to around 80 hectares, producing Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and rare plantings such as Riesling, all farmed with the same attention to detail. Today, Aldo and his wife Milena work alongside their children, Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro, blending tradition, resilience, and quiet innovation into every vintage.
For the Vajra family, winegrowing is an act of care — for the land, the vines, and the people who will share the wine. The vineyards are treated as living ecosystems, with soils protected through cover crops, manual farming, and an avoidance of heavy machinery. Certified organic since the early 1970s, the estate’s approach nurtures biodiversity and expresses the individuality of each site.
In the cellar, the aim is not to shape the wine but to let it speak. Grapes are handled gently, macerations are long and unhurried, and maturation takes place in large neutral Slavonian oak to preserve purity of fruit and the fine aromatics of each variety. The result is a range of wines that capture the bright perfume, precise texture, and age-worthy structure of Barolo and its neighbouring hills, staying true to the Vajra family’s belief in authenticity over artifice.
Dark cherry, blood orange, marzipan and star anise open the bouquet, accented by cedarwood, purple flowers, tobacco leaf and subtle earthy tones. Hints of iron, wet clay and liquorice add depth and a quietly brooding, noble character.
Broad, finely woven tannins frame juicy red and dark fruits of vibrant intensity. Sweet spice, aromatic herbs and a saline mineral note bring energy and lift, keeping the wine from ever feeling heavy.
Long and savoury, with a lasting impression that speaks of place more than anything else.
