G.D. Vajra Coste di Rose Barolo 2022 is a Nebbiolo shaped by one of Barolo’s most singular vineyard sites, from the steep south-facing slopes of Coste di Rose in Piedmont, Italy. Drawn from the Vaira family’s 1.5-hectare parcel at 310 metres above sea level, the wine reflects the distinctive Arenaria di Diano soils beneath the vines: Tortonian sandstone that lends aromatic lift, mineral detail, and a finely saline line.
Often considered the quieter counterpart to Bricco delle Viole, Coste di Rose reveals a more intimate and ethereal side of G.D. Vajra’s Barolo. The 2022 vintage was harvested on 27 September, followed by triple manual sorting and fermentation in custom vertical tini with gentle extraction. Extended maceration under submerged cap lasted 47 days, building nuance and structure without excess weight. Spontaneous malolactic conversion took place the following spring before maturation for 22 months in 25-hectolitre Slavonian oak casks, with bottling completed in May 2025.
The resulting Barolo carries remarkable clarity and composure, balancing floral perfume, red-toned fruit, and savoury mineral tension. Its precision and understated power make it particularly compelling alongside truffle dishes, roast duck, or slow-braised veal.

Floral, as is typical of this estate, with crunchy red fruit and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied, with a blanket of delicate, tender fruit defined by chalky, precise yet silky tannins. Drinkable now with proper aeration, but will improve with some bottle age.
G.D. Vajra is one of Barolo’s most respected family-run estates, founded in 1972 by Aldo Vaira in the village of Vergne, the highest commune in the appellation. What began as a reluctant summer on the family farm turned into Aldo’s lifelong vocation, and by 1971 he had adopted organic farming — a first for Barolo at the time. Over the decades, the estate has grown to around 80 hectares, producing Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and rare plantings such as Riesling, all farmed with the same attention to detail. Today, Aldo and his wife Milena work alongside their children, Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro, blending tradition, resilience, and quiet innovation into every vintage.
For the Vajra family, winegrowing is an act of care — for the land, the vines, and the people who will share the wine. The vineyards are treated as living ecosystems, with soils protected through cover crops, manual farming, and an avoidance of heavy machinery. Certified organic since the early 1970s, the estate’s approach nurtures biodiversity and expresses the individuality of each site.
In the cellar, the aim is not to shape the wine but to let it speak. Grapes are handled gently, macerations are long and unhurried, and maturation takes place in large neutral Slavonian oak to preserve purity of fruit and the fine aromatics of each variety. The result is a range of wines that capture the bright perfume, precise texture, and age-worthy structure of Barolo and its neighbouring hills, staying true to the Vajra family’s belief in authenticity over artifice.
Red and amarena cherry, cranberry, strawberry and plum open the bouquet, supported by violet and delicate floral layers. Sweet spice, dark chocolate, nutmeg and clove form a rich second register, lifted by white pepper, fresh mint and orange zest.
A fine, signature granular grip greets the front of the mouth before juicy dark and red fruit unfolds with quiet intensity. Floral and citrus accents ride on lively acidity, giving the wine an almost weightless, ethereal poise.
Pure, focused and long, with lingering red fruit and crushed limestone carrying through to the end.
