G.D. Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole 2020 is a Nebbiolo from the celebrated Barolo cru of Bricco delle Viole in Piedmont, Italy, from one of the estate’s most elevated and expressive vineyard sites. Rising between 400 and 480 metres above sea level on Barolo’s western ridge, the vineyard sits above the fog line where Alpine breezes, wide diurnal shifts and pale limestone-rich soils shape a Barolo defined by aromatic precision and structural finesse. The 2020 vintage reflects both the altitude of the site and G.D. Vajra’s restrained, traditional approach, yielding a wine of clarity, depth and long-term composure.
The vineyard’s historic vines, some dating back to 1931, 1949 and 1968, are rooted in soils rich in limestone, magnesium and manganese. These conditions consistently produce Nebbiolo of lifted perfume, fine tannins and a distinct floral signature. In 2020, a warm growing season was tempered at altitude, preserving freshness and allowing for a balanced expression of power and detail. The result is a Barolo that carries both generosity and restraint, shaped by site rather than force.
Vinification follows the estate’s classical method, with extended maceration, spontaneous malolactic conversion, and maturation in large Slavonian oak casks before bottling. The approach prioritises transparency and site expression, allowing Bricco delle Viole to speak with its characteristic clarity and restraint.

A ripe ruby colour, the 2020 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is incredible on the nose… candied roses, wild raspberries, tea leaf, and sweet sage. Medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins, a balanced, compact nature, and a velvety texture… one of the most complete wines I’ve tasted from Vajra to date.
Rose petals, racy plums and cherries with subtle white pepper spices and mineral. The tight, full-bodied palate is grasped by fine, minerally textured tannins. Powerful, ample and vertical in the middle before a lengthy, mineral finish.
The 2020 Barolo Bricco delle Viole, Vajra's flagship, is very fine… dark cherry, kirsch, blood orange, spice and lavender are nicely amplified. The 2020 is gracious and elegant… another wine that captures my keen interests with its sublime balance.
G.D. Vajra is one of Barolo’s most respected family-run estates, founded in 1972 by Aldo Vaira in the village of Vergne, the highest commune in the appellation. What began as a reluctant summer on the family farm turned into Aldo’s lifelong vocation, and by 1971 he had adopted organic farming — a first for Barolo at the time. Over the decades, the estate has grown to around 80 hectares, producing Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and rare plantings such as Riesling, all farmed with the same attention to detail. Today, Aldo and his wife Milena work alongside their children, Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro, blending tradition, resilience, and quiet innovation into every vintage.
For the Vajra family, winegrowing is an act of care — for the land, the vines, and the people who will share the wine. The vineyards are treated as living ecosystems, with soils protected through cover crops, manual farming, and an avoidance of heavy machinery. Certified organic since the early 1970s, the estate’s approach nurtures biodiversity and expresses the individuality of each site.
In the cellar, the aim is not to shape the wine but to let it speak. Grapes are handled gently, macerations are long and unhurried, and maturation takes place in large neutral Slavonian oak to preserve purity of fruit and the fine aromatics of each variety. The result is a range of wines that capture the bright perfume, precise texture, and age-worthy structure of Barolo and its neighbouring hills, staying true to the Vajra family’s belief in authenticity over artifice.
Violet, dried rose and wild berry lift from the glass, underpinned by notes of red cherry, sweet spice, white truffle and mountain herb. The high-altitude signature of freshness and floral intensity is unmistakable.
The palate is full and precise, with chiselled tannins framing concentrated red fruit and a subtle mineral thread. A classic expression of altitude and old vine character, with the density of the vintage held in careful balance.
Persistent and focused, with lingering floral notes, fine tannins and the quiet assurance of a wine built to evolve.
