Precision, transparency and an unwavering fidelity to place define this beautiful Barolo from one of Piedmont's most philosophically grounded family estates. The G.D. Vajra Barolo Albe 2022 is crafted entirely from Nebbiolo sourced from three high-elevation sites within the Barolo commune - Fossati, La Volta and Coste di Vergne - each catching the sun at a different angle as it arcs across the Langhe sky. Exposures range from south-south-east to south-west at elevations between 380 and 480 metres above sea level, where cool nights preserve aromatic lift and structural precision.
The name Albe, Italian for "sunrises," is both literal and philosophical. Each morning, three separate dawns wash across these vineyards. It is, as Milena Vaira describes it, "the exceptional simplicity of nature that makes the awakening of life an everyday miracle." As a blend, Albe functions as a tribute to Barolo's great traditionalists: wines of harmony over muscle, grace over statement.
The 2022 vintage arrived after a summer of warmth and resilience. Low yields concentrated flavour and vibrancy, and September's temperature drop created ideal conditions for Nebbiolo's long, unhurried ripening. Grapes were sorted manually three times before vinification in custom vertical tini, with extended maceration averaging 36 days and spontaneous malolactic conversion the following spring. Twenty-two months in large Slavonian oak casks completed the evolution before bottling in June 2025.

A very exuberant yet delicate nose of rose petals, clementine peel and raspberries. The palate is medium-bodied with supple red fruit and silky tannins. Very pleasant. Drink now or hold.
Bright ruby colour. Dried flower and gentle balsamic scents are joined by fresh cherry and strawberry, mint and a tickle of alcohol. It is plush on the palate with sweet berry fruits and chewy tannins, with some breadth, though the acid is fine and nicely lingering to conclude. Not overly complex, but this does have easy appeal.
G.D. Vajra is one of Barolo’s most respected family-run estates, founded in 1972 by Aldo Vaira in the village of Vergne, the highest commune in the appellation. What began as a reluctant summer on the family farm turned into Aldo’s lifelong vocation, and by 1971 he had adopted organic farming — a first for Barolo at the time. Over the decades, the estate has grown to around 80 hectares, producing Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto, and rare plantings such as Riesling, all farmed with the same attention to detail. Today, Aldo and his wife Milena work alongside their children, Giuseppe, Francesca, and Isidoro, blending tradition, resilience, and quiet innovation into every vintage.
For the Vajra family, winegrowing is an act of care — for the land, the vines, and the people who will share the wine. The vineyards are treated as living ecosystems, with soils protected through cover crops, manual farming, and an avoidance of heavy machinery. Certified organic since the early 1970s, the estate’s approach nurtures biodiversity and expresses the individuality of each site.
In the cellar, the aim is not to shape the wine but to let it speak. Grapes are handled gently, macerations are long and unhurried, and maturation takes place in large neutral Slavonian oak to preserve purity of fruit and the fine aromatics of each variety. The result is a range of wines that capture the bright perfume, precise texture, and age-worthy structure of Barolo and its neighbouring hills, staying true to the Vajra family’s belief in authenticity over artifice.
Rose petals, candied cherry and amarena give way to cedarwood, juniper and wildflowers, with a lift of lemon blossom, blood orange and the faintest suggestion of forest floor.
Mountain strawberries and juicy dark fruits are carried by a fine, silky texture. Tannins are refined and present without aggression, underpinned by a beautifully mineral core.
Long, clean and crystalline, the kind of finish that invites the next sip rather than demanding it.
