Domaine Pierre Usseglio et Fils Chateauneuf-du-Pape Cuvee de mon Aieul 2020
Domaine Pierre Usseglio et Fils is located in the village of Châteauneuf du Pape, has built a solid reputation over the years as producing rich, ripe red wines, so it's interesting to see that Thierry Usseglio and his son, Gregory, are experimenting with the use of whole bunches and an entirely new wine style that combines a large proportion of white grapes and use of amphorae.
100% Grenache from vineyards in Les Serres, Les Bédines and La Crau. Partially destemmed with 3-5 week concrete vat vinification, with aging occurring in aged 80-90% concrete vats and 10-20% oak casks for 12-14 months.
The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée De Mon Aïeul is all Grenache (from three terroirs) that was not destemmed and is still resting all in used demi-muids. Incredible aromatics of blackberries, ground pepper, toasted spice, raspberries, and flowers all emerge from this deep, full-bodied, yet wonderfully elegant barrel sample that makes the most of this great vintage. It’s going to drink brilliantly for 15-20 years with no issues, and I’d certainly put this up with the top handful of wines in the vintage. - Jeb Dunnuck, 96-98 points
