This bottle of Dalwhinnie is apart of Diageo's 2022 Distillers Edition. The idea behind The Distillers Edition is to provide an alternative expression of each whisky; to add richness, complexity and interest in the form of a different ‘take’ on that whisky’s attributes. There are seven distinctive Distillers Edition expressions (including Lagavulin, Oban, Talisker, Caol Ila, Dalwhinnie, and more), the remarkable and complex Distillers Edition process, and the people who make it. An incentive to explore The Distillers Edition itself.
Made in the highest and coldest working distillery in Scotland, with water from a loch at 2000 feet, Dalwhinnie whisky thrives on extreme conditions – creating a liquid as sweet and accessible as its highland home is remote. No other distillery may use the water from Lochan na Doire-uaine – "Loch of the green thicket" – a gathering of pure snowmelt and rainwater high in the Drumochter Hills. That might be why Dalwhinnie Scotch is the only Highland whisky to offer a combination of clean and accessible, malty-sweet taste with a smooth and smoky warmth.
This exotic Dalwhinnie is smoothly honeyed and warming, with appealing hints of the fruits, nuts and spices found in an oriental market and richly satisfying. Dalwhinnie is one of the most northerly mainland distilleries in Scotland. This has a similar ageing regime to the Glenkinchie: first matured in refill American and European oak casks, with the second maturation in oloroso-seasoned re-charred American oak with heavily re-charred ends. This adds spice and nuts to the classic tropical fruit of Dalwhinnie.
On the nose are notes of guava, and mango, with twists of black pepper. On the palate are flavours of fresh tropical fruit drizzled with honey, a touch of toasted coconut, and some nutmeg. The finish is a little nutty, and with warming spice.
