Depth, authority and classical balance define this benchmark Châteauneuf-du-Pape from one of the Southern Rhône’s most revered estates. The 2022 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape is crafted by the Avril family from a mosaic of old-vine parcels spread across the appellation, capturing the full breadth of its terroirs. Grenache forms the backbone of the blend, supported by Mourvèdre, Syrah and other permitted varieties, contributing complexity, structure and aromatic lift. The 2022 vintage reflects a warm, sun-filled growing season, yet the wine retains freshness and composure through meticulous vineyard work and restrained winemaking. In the glass, it is powerful yet poised, with layered dark fruit framed by finely worked tannins. The palate shows richness without excess, balancing generosity with precision and savoury depth. Traditional vinification and extended élevage allow the wine’s natural texture and complexity to emerge without overt oak influence. This is a classic Clos des Papes expression, built for longevity and capable of evolving beautifully over decades.

“Silky and harmonious with dark cherries, blackberries and mild spice, showing elegant, graceful structure.”
Clos des Papes is one of the most renowned estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with a history of producing remarkable wines under the guidance of Paul-VincentAvril. The estate has been bottling its own wine since 1896 and is celebrated for its authentic, long-lived expressions of the appellation. Covering approximately 80 acres, Clos des Papes includes 24 plots, each boasting some of the finest terroir in Châteauneuf. The geographical diversity of the vineyards allows for optimal ripeness at harvest and the flexibility to combine different grape varieties, producing both red and white wines designed for aging. Yields are kept low at 28 hl/hectare, and the grapes undergo strict sorting to ensure the highest quality.
Clos des Papes’ vineyards are scattered around Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with plots in areas such as La Crau and near the old Château, as well as to the north and south of the village. In total, the estate comprises over 30 parcels of vines. Small plots of vines just outside the appellation are used to produce Petit vin d’Avrilin very limited quantities.
Aromas of blackberry, dark cherry and plum layered with Provençal garrigue, dried herbs, liquorice, leather, spice and subtle earthy undertones.
Concentrated dark fruit flows across the palate, supported by fine-grained tannins, savoury spice, hints of truffle and a dusty, mineral nuance that adds depth and definition.
A persistent, harmonised finish marked by lingering spice, ripe fruit and balanced warmth, underpinned by structure and freshness.
