Richness, aromatic lift and finely chiselled structure define the Chatto Seven Inch Pinot Noir 2025, a single-vineyard expression from Tasmania’s cool Huon Valley. Produced by respected Pinot Noir specialist Jim Chatto, the wine comes from the Seven Inch Vineyard at Glaziers Bay, located approximately 750 metres from Chatto’s own Isle Vineyard. The site was planted in 2007 and is meticulously tended by neighbouring growers Max and Sue Kitchell. Fruit from the vineyard has formed part of the Chatto range since 2014, with the first standalone Seven Inch release bottled from the 2018 vintage. The vineyard takes its name from nearby Seven Inch Beach and occupies a cooler position close to the Chatto estate. The 2025 release is made entirely from Pinot Noir and combines four clones: 115, G5V15, D5V12 and 8104. This clonal composition contributes layers of red fruit, perfume, spice and structural depth while preserving the wine’s distinctive Huon Valley freshness.
The ferment incorporated approximately 12.5 per cent whole bunches, providing aromatic lift and savoury detail without dominating the purity of the fruit. Rose-petal perfume introduces a vibrant spectrum of red plum, raspberry, cranberry and red cherry, accompanied by a subtle struck-flint character. The palate is rich yet poised, carrying concentrated fruit across a framework of velvet-like tannins and energetic acidity. Layers of exotic spice, leaf litter, meadow flowers, mushroom broth and subtle charcuterie introduce further complexity as the wine opens. Saline and crushed-stone nuances lend a distinctly maritime quality and reinforce the wine’s sense of place. Despite its generous texture, Seven Inch remains lithe and precisely shaped, with fine tannins providing drive through the palate. It is expressive enough to enjoy upon release, although its concentration, acidity and structural detail indicate excellent potential for graceful development through 2038. The result is a sumptuous yet controlled Tasmanian Pinot Noir combining fragrance, purity and underlying power.
